smoked neckbones
smoked pork shoulder

~Here's a good recipe for bean soup.~
2 ham hocks
1 sliced yellow onion
1 med bag of White or Navy beans.
Get a pot of water. Make sure water is above the beans and ham hocks.
Place everything in it and bring it to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low and cook until beans are soft. (about 2 or 3 hours)
Add some black pepper and salt to taste.
Serve with home made bread and butter.
Now I'm hungry! ;-)

I use ham mostly if you don't have any you can use bacon but its not quite as good. Also I make White Chicken Chili that uses white northern or navy beans and chicken. Its really good and my family likes it. Last week I took it to the staff at work and they ate it all and asked for the recipe. E-mail me if you want the recipe. Good luck, Julz

My grandmother always used a leftover ham bone. or buy some ham hocks at the store.

I don't like the fat it adds.. so when I make beans I flavor it with a smoked pork chop or ham boullion.

Usually pork. In the case of refried beans, you can use bacon or bacon grease to reach the desired effect.

typically, it's pork. chopped steak, also known as stew steak, is good, but you can really use anything you want. i usually cook the meat first and then throw it in with the beans in a crockpot.
