He is seventeen weeks. He is a yorkie/maltese mix weighing four pounds. He is such a cutie. He is not neutered yet. He's been humping his toys....he has particular ones he likes....for weeks now off and on. My vet tells me this is normal and not to worry. She says he is just trying to let his toys know he is in charge. It's hilarious when he does it. My husband and I try to laugh as quietly as we can but it's hysterical sometimes. I've also heard neutering won't solve the problem. I won't do the alpha roll, so please don't give me that advice.

But is he really doing anything wrong that I need to punish him? Does this behavior need to be corrected?

Your vet is right, it won't stop even with neutering. That said, neutering will decrease the frequency. Plus, neutering is good for many reasons. Your pup is only a little over 4 months, so it's a tad young to neuter, but when the time comes, I hope you will.

In the interim, a little "hey" usually is enough to get my dogs to stop humping. In other words, your dog may want to be in charge (even if it is of his toys), but you're "hey" reminds him that you are really the one in charge. This has been enough for my dogs. Oh, and I am the alpha in the house, yet there's a minimal amount of yelling (almost none) and lots of play and loving. So being the alpha doesn't mean hitting, yelling or being cruel. In fact, if that's what you think being alpha means, then you and your dog require obedience training (I recommend this - it's helped me a LOT).

Have fun with the pup!

You say you will not take the alpha role, could your husband?
You can be the alpha without hurting the dog, often people assume to be alpha you automatically have to hurt the dog.

A firm voice, or as the other responder stated, a sudden noise will distract him from his "habit" Or if you simply say NO and take his toy from him (for a short time) when he does his incorrect behavior. He will realize the toy belongs to you, and he will not have to dominate it.

If you are unwilling to correct him in any way, you will just have to learn to live with his little habits.

So that you say that he is neutered proper!? He just isn't doing that or feeling the urge to do this. On no account scold the puppy for doing that unless for peeing or pooping on the ground (that the one time I scold my dog)for the reason that he could believe he still has a part of his reproductive method. And he is showing her he's the dominant male.If you happen to have to, supply some of the dogs away or keep them separated as a lot as feasible!

Try squirting him with a squirt bottle, saying NO loudly or throwing a can of rocks next to him to startle him.
