I have one, I'm a guy, and I found myself asking the same question. I traded in my 01 mustang because of the winters here in WI and got the Yaris, polar white. It took a lot to go from a mustang to a yaris. My friends laughed and said how is it even possible. I will tell you this though: It's not a beautiful car by any means, and people might give you a funny look while driving it, but it's not that bad. It gets great gas mileage and it's actually got a little pep to it. You get a lot of car for around $13,000. I wouldn't stick thousands of dollars into it, but I'm thinking a spoiler, exhaust tip, and blue/white xenon head lights all from TRD and it'll be looking a lot more sporty. Beleive me, when you are low on cash and put 5 bucks in and you get a half a tank or so, you'll be lovin it. Plus all those friends that laughed at me went on a trip across the state in it, in a snowstorm, and now they have a way better opinion of it.

Seriously consider the Honda Fit, Dodge Caliber, and Nissan Versa before you get stuck with a Yaris. If you are looking at style the Dodge CAliber is right for you, it has above average reliability paired with a good looking car and cool features. If fun and functionality is your priority, get a Honda Fit. The Fit is easily the most versatile car in its class with its adjustable seats, and it is also said to be the funnest. The Versa is the biggest and safest. The Versa is built with the highest quality parts in the class that you wouldnt expect to find in a budget car, and got top scores on the NHSTA crash test (although the Dodge did well too). These cars have many advantages over the Yaris, still have the same fuel economy, and cost about the same (with options). The Yaris is a bare-bones car, you have to add every option you want jacking the price up, while its competitors have that all standard. Toyotas "legendary" reliability, that always wound up coming second to Honda, and Toyotas reliability is fading (need proof:http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/10/toyota_quality.html. ) Last year Toyota also had the most recalls, but the media "failed" to notice since millions would stand against them because of thier reputation. These days reputation is nothing, technology advances so fast it cant keep up. Ford also had more recalls than GM and DaimlerChrysler combined, for reasons like exploding engines and wheels falling off. Common problems with Toyotas are, cheap stereos, grotesquely underpowered 4 cylinder engines, and plastic rattling until it falls off. People then complain that when they take it to the dealer to be fixed they just say "The cars are made with so much plastic its practically impossible to fix". Just look at the competition, and you will see you cant assume somethings the best just because its a Toyota, or Japanese.

Well it is a small car; i drive a Toyota Yaris myself but it is a 4 door Sedan and my tall friends (6'5 and up) have had some problems with leg space so i can imagine that the liftback would have the same problem. For a guy it would seem like a small car but its whatever works for you. I think you should think about what you want in a car; make a list pick your top 5 and use them to decide what you want. Its not all about looks but also reliability. Every body else is saying get a Honda Fit or Nissan Versa but that might not work for you either; one man's meat is another man's poison. Most sites let you compare their cars side to side; i think Honda would let you compare the Fit to Yaris and Versa.

1. Nissan Versa
2. Honda Fit (close)
3. Hyndai Elantra
4. Totota Yaris (distant)
Don't join the mindless minions - get something cool, like one of my top three. Drive them all the same day. If you need lots of passenger and cargo space, get a Versa. If you want nimble, get a Fit. Best looking is the Hyundai. If you want to scream to everyone you know nothing about cars, buy a Yaris.

Most people wouldn't really think anything - It's a small economy car that's probably quite practical for getting around town.
It certainly isn't prestigious or anything, but don't go out and buy (or worse - lease) a car you can't afford just to look cool.
Heck of a lot better than taking a bus.

look at it this way: you would be getting amazing MPG and it would be mechanically solid - which is better than about 75% of cars out there. if you want it get it, dont worry what others think, its your car
