Since you wrote boys, I know you don't mean men.
Why because 1) they feel by teasing you they get a reaction from you. 2) Their friends won't see through their ploy and tease the daylights out of them. 3) They won't arrouse suspition to what is truly going on. 4) They can act like what you do does'nt affect them because of their behavior but behind the scenes they play over and over in their minds your interaction with them.
They are not man enought to make an announcement to the world that this is the person I care about. That's why they are just boys and not men. Men can make commitments (marriage) keep a job, provide for their families. Boys are just children who are not yet grown to take on the responsibilities of manhood. There can be males who are grown but have the mind of a boy. So you better know the difference other wise you will be watching people in your situation on Jerry Springer of "My childs daddy has 3 other kids by 3 diff women and he says he loves me but he dont come around...ect

Being a girl, I don't know the exact answer but I'm just going to take a guess.
Guys can be a little afraid of admitting that they like you because of what their friends think, or how it will represent them to other people. They try to cover it up by saying, "Why would I like her, just look at what a mess she is" or "No way!" or doing something really mean to that person that they secretly like and end up hurting the girls feelings. I think they should just suck it up and tell the girl, or else she will end up NOT liking him and will totally move on.

they usualy dont want thier friends or anyone else to know they like u. they think it will "mess up thier image". or they really do H8 u!!!!!:) (JK)
