I have a black lab dog who is three and just recently other dogs usually bitches have been aggressive towards him for no reason, does any one have any explanation for this. He still has his 'you no whats' as I have no reason to get him done. He is very laid back and a big softie! Could his hormones be given out the wrong message to the ladies? He doesn't act interested in that way though! I feel sorry for him getting picked on!

Try not to take the neutering advice my brother dog was a black Labrador and he was not neutered and he lived till he was 12 then his back legs went and he was put to sleep so not all male dog get cancer. I know a vet nurse and she said if a male dog is good and laid back there is no reason to have him done unless he starts weeing all over your home or gets aggressive. I have a dog (sisters male dog who is quit snappy) & female (my dog) in mine everyday & sometimes over night and I have never seen my girl get aggressive with any dog so I strongly disagree that all females are aggressive my Dakota can be hit and her tail pulled by anyone of any age and she has never bit or snaped at anyone (she is the most loving dog I have ever had or known) If anything Males dogs are the more aggressive ones. He is possibly giving out the wrong message like you said yourself.

Dogs use their body language to communicate, maybe he is giving off signals that they dont like.

I walk a black lab and ive not yet met a dog that hasnt tried to attack him, the thing with him is, he is a BIG dog, he still has his 'bits' as well and i think a lot of dogs just fancy trying to beat him in a fight, which just wouldnt happen!

Please be careful about the advice being given to you hear. It is absolutely not true that bitches are always aggressive, but chances are, you dog is giving off body language signs that you may not be picking up on. He is a male and that will cause him to simply excude it in body language. The girls know what he want.

In any case, you have EVERY reason to get him done. To prevent unwanted matings obviously, just incase your back is turned for a few seconds, and two, it will lower his testosterone drastically, and eventually have an affect on his body language, and then there is the VERY prevelent fact that prostate cancer in older dogs, PARTICULARLY labs, can and often are fatal! Potentially cutting off a few years from your dogs life! PLEASE its in his best interest to get him neutered.

Older lady dogs get faddy about who they communicate with, a younger girl or boy dog can make them snappy, when they just want to say hello - I have experience of an old sheltie cow down the road! I feel sorry for him too, just avoid the local dragons, I do!

I just don't know! Perhaps it is a question of canine taste. My undoctored mongrel is dead friendly and never aggressive but there are some dogs she just dismisses out of hand (and some dogs who dismiss her). Most of the times (away from her season) sex (or the lack of it) does not seem to be a feature.

I guess they make up there own minds just like we do. Maybe we should not be surprised at that.

It may be that your dog is giving off signals, or maybe not giving off signals that you are missing. Have a read of this article:

Bitches aren't usually aggressive towards males without reason, maybe he is "making suggestions" to them that you don't realise!
Please be aware that unneutered males are sometimes attacked by other dogs too. Other dogs become confused about the status of a neutered dog.

You don't say what he is doing when the bitches turn nasty? He could be getting flirty-when dogs mate they often play as courtship first and this to humans looks just like normal dog play. So if he looks to you like he is inviting them to play he could really be asking if they fancy some sex!

my guess is that he is provoking them in some way. dogs communicate by body language. it can be so sublte that it is easy to miss. If he looks them directly in the eyes or gets real still with his tail up when they get close to him, he is showing signs of dominece that the other dogs are not wanting to put up with. also, if he is too out gowing and "pushy" the other dogs may consider him rude and try to put him in his place.

please spay and neuter all pets... there are too many unwanted pets that die every day.

yes, it is a problem that he could be emitting pheramones without even himself realizing it. This could become a major problem in the future, and although he may have no "alone time" with the bitches, it is ALWAYS a good idea to get your pet neutered/spayed.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT LISTEN TO THE ANSWERS THAT ARE TELLING YOU THERE IS NO GOOD REASON TO GET YOUR DOG NEUTERED. there is ALWAYS a reason to get your pet neutered, i.e. unwanted litters/mating. PEOPLE WHO DON'T GET THEIR PET SPAYED/NEUTERED ARE THE REASON THOUSANDS OF UNWANTED PETS ARE DYING eVeRy DaY!!!!!! HEED MY WORDS!!!!
