For example; when you're watching a mystery type movie or television program and the key to solving the mystery revolves around deleted files on a computer, the files are always able to be found and the mystery is solved.
Just curious if this is possible or just the typical "mirror and smoke" effect of Hollywood.

Absolutely you can restore deleted files. Essentially, when you delete files and empty the recycle bin, all Windows does is change the first letter of the filename to a "$". They now become invisible to the naked eye, but they are not erased. Filenames that start with $ are marked for being WRITTEN OVER but it doesnt meant that they WILL BE. There are free programs from www.download.com that will scan your drives for deleted material and actually restore them. AND the government has even more sophisticated software that can restore even written over material. Not sure how that works though. Best advice: Dont download anything illegal. Period.

When you delete something from your computer all it does is take away the "arrows" pointing to it. In other words it is still there but your computer pretends it is not. So if someone knew what they were doing theyWOULD be able to retrieve the deleted file. If you don't wnat it to be recovered you can shred it not delete it which is overwriting the file a certain amount of times(it depends how strongly you want to delete it. However if you do that while a normal hacker might not be able to recover it the CIA with advanced equipment may still be able to recover it

Unfortunately, once a picture has been deleted, it can't be retrieved unless you've backed it up - usually on the computer. There are a couple of solutions to keep this from happening again. 1 - invest in a larger memory card so you don't have to delete to make room for more pictures before you get a chance to upload. 2 - You might have to switch cameras to make this one work, but it's a cool one. There's this new memory card called eye-fi that automatically connects to your wireless network and uploads your photos so you don't have to remember. I think for now they only make them in SD cards though, and olympus used XD.

more than possible. Happens all the time. In most cases the files are not actually "deleted" the computer just opens that space to be written on. That does not mean it has been written on and if not the file is still there

Unless you have a super eraser like the NSA (eraseX10 & 101010 Overwitte) you can go to the trash can and do a restore.

Next time protect those ladies room spycamera photos by cutting the a CD or DVD. Backups are also a good idea.

Actually yes, it is possible. For a field trip in my Criminal Justice class we went to a university in Buffalo that was JUST for Criminal Justice. We sat down with the professor and he told us about that stuff, and there are ways to retrieve deleted files. Cool isn't it? :D
