I hit my leg, it got a pretty bad bruise and then it started filling with fluid. I had to go to the ER and have it lanced and drained and they said the blood work came back as a Strepp infection (not Staph). At the time I did not think to ask the Dr. what that was or why it happeend , has anyone had this happen or know why it would be Strepp.

Probably just bad luck. Our skin is home to dozens (hundreds?) of different types of bacteria, including Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, which usually live peaceful and happy lives on our skins without causing any trouble.

When you got your bruise, you probably also got a small cut or abrasion on your skin which allowed some of the strep to enter the bruised area. There they found themselves with a huge food supply (dead blood from the bruise), and your immune system was unable to get to them (because of the dead tissue that is the bruise) ... so they start growing like crazy... and you have an infection.

It could just as easily have been a staph infection, or any one of a dozen or more common germs from your skin, but the strep got there first.

P.S. Don't blame the bugs - they didn't set out to hurt you, they just found themselves in an environment that allowed them to grow like crazy.

Strep like staph is located all over the place (in the dirt, on the ground, etc). When you fell or hit your leg there must have been a small wound and that was the enterance of the bacteria. It brewed and then ballooned to the fluid in the knee.

OK, there are lots of different species of bacteria under the Streptococcus genus. Sore throats, scarlet fever are caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, otherwise known as Group A Beta Hemolytic strep. Strep throat is what most people think of. But in reality there are many different kinds of Strep bacteria species and even different strains within a species. Strep spp. live in all kinds of environments - throats, bowels, surfaces, soil etc.

It is very possible to have a strep infection in a wound.

Sheer bad luck. Most skin infections are Staph.

Strep is simply another bacteria. Not necessarily worse OR better to have than Staph. Most good antibiotics for Staph also hit Staph.

The only thing I can think of is Strep Throat. As long as the Doctor prescribed an antibiotic you are in good shape. When you find out what it is let us know. You don't have the flesh eating disease do you?
