Make sure to see anyone's work before you hire him/her for any aspect of the wedding. Amateurs might be cheaper, but how heartbroken would you be if the video doesn't come out? I've nothing against people starting out in the business as long as they can prove they have the equipment and know how to use it. Case in point: at my wedding, I hired a cheap DJ - how hard could it be to spin a few records? He ended up bowing out at the last minute and sent his cousin who showed up in a heavy metal Tshirt, without my first dance wedding song!! I got what I paid for.

I had heard from everyone that this was such a great idea. So I interviewed a few students that were recommended to me, and watched video that they had previously shot. I chose one, paid him, and now I have a TERRIBLE wedding video that I cannot bear to watch. I wish I had paid someone for a good video. He shot pointless footage of candles burning and church decorations, but completely cut out the entire sermon, my mom being seated, my bridesmaids walking down the aisle, etc. It is do dissapointing. Please only hire someone that you trust completely. And if you do hire a student, make it 100% crystal clear what you want. Good luck!

If you have a local college that offers video services and such as a major, I'd say go for it. Hold interviews, ask to see a portfolio, just as you would if you were hiring a professional. Bear in mind, however, that their equipment may not be as sophisticated as a professional's. In the end, you get what you pay for.

I had a photographer that was just starting out who did our wedding photo's at a discounted price. THe photos are good, but they are not breathtaking like some of the other photo's I have seen. I wish I had spent a little more and got a photographer that could have taken a few more artistic photo's rather than ones that look like anyone could have taken them.

contact a college in your area and ask for the Fine Arts dept. head. Tell him what you want. He can recommend a student but see their work before you hire them.
