KENIA,

I'VE DONE BOTH. AMALGAM CAN BE EASIER TO WORK WITH AND THERE ARE CERTAIN CASES WHERE AMALGAM IS BEST SU.ITED FOR THE JOB.
THE IS AN ISSUE WITH COMPOSITE AND LONGEVITY.CAN A COMPOSITE LAST AS LONG AS AN AMALGAM? THERE IS INSUFFICIENT DATA FOR MY SATISFACTION.
OTHER SITUATIONS CAN ONLY BE SUITED FOR COMPOSITES.
THERE IS NO HARD AND SET RULE FOR THIS.

Composite. They are better looking and not that much harder to place than amalgam. You'll often hear that amalgams last longer than composite. If you've ever looked at an x-ray of a tooth with an amalgam in it, the area with the amalgam is "whited out" from the metal. Composite fillings show any decay that is present, so you're actually catching decay sooner. Amalgams also expand and contract more than composites causing crack lines in the tooth (if the the filling is large) which means crowns in the future.
