I did my kitchen remodel plans and order with Home Depot last fall. I stupidly paid for the whole thing up front, including install. The cabnets are sitting in the garage, but I am now dating a carpenter who wants to install them for me. I just want HD to give me the install portion back. I've paid for all there design services and cabnets and they've made interest on the money since Nov. Do I have the right to ask for just the install portion back ?

HD gives all work, like cabinet installation, to their approved contractors to do for them. So, odds are if you've already paid for your cabinets and installation, they've already paid their contractor. but that shouldn't stop you from getting your money back. tell them taht you don't want them installed, and if they give you any problems just get irate.

home depot managers are typically pushovers. their bonuses come from store sales, and they preach that the best way to get higher sales is from repeat customers...especially from people who are doing home remodeling projects, since odds are...you'll need more stuff at some point.

they'll try to make you as happy as possible, so you'll return. if the assistant manager won't comply, go to the store manager, and still if you don't make progess ask for a number to reach to district manager. at some point, they'll work with you...

plus, getting money back for that shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Read your contract. It should detail what, if any, of your money you can get back. It might also be worth a call to the store just to ask them.

While I understand your BF's desire to do this for you, you might still consider letting HD (or rather, their local contractors) go ahead and do the work, and have your BF just inspect the job they do. It's not that I don't believe your BF would do a good job, but if something goes wrong (with either the installation or the relationship), having a guarantee from HD might be worth the extra cost.

Why did they deliver the cabinets before they scheduled an install in the first place? You can always use that angle if they get an attitude with you. Yes, you should have no problems getting your money back if they have not sent anyone to your house other than for delivery.
