If the military member has less than a year left on their current enlistment do they let them finish that enlistment or just send them on their way? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thank You!!!

my husband has been treated for hearing loss for the past year, and now they are sending his file to the medical evaluation board...we're just trying to prepare ourselves for what can happen. We are currently stationed overseas, if that makes any difference.

It is never an immediate thing, of course, nothing in the military is. There is a lot of red tape to go through, and just when you think you are ready to be discharged, something is changed or lost or , is needed that wasn't when the red tape started. It takes about 4 to 6 months, is a shorter answer.

I doubt that he will reach his ETS. A MEB (Medical Evaluation Board) can move fairly rapidly. Once the decision was made to discharge me ( I broke both ankles parachuting, and 2 surgeries didnt repair the damage well enough for me to continue my duties) I was out in less than 6 months.
That being said, dont forget that the service member is due a large severance package for being medically discharged. I dont remeber the exact formula, but its something like Base pay times years in service..I was an E-4 at the time of my discharge, with 6 years of active duty time, and I received a little over $14000 in severance. It will also depend on the percentage of his disability. Over 30% rates a medical retirement, not a straight discharge...

Sounds like they will give you a medical discharge. That will come with a check each month for your disabilities. Good luck.

After you are examined throughly by Military doctors and you go thru a medical review board and they decide to give you a Medical Discharge, you will then proceed to be processed out of the military and be on your way out. You are welcome!! US Army(RET)
21 Years!!
In cases of a 30% and higher disability, you will
be given a Medical Retirement and will receive
PX, Commissary and Medical benefits either at
a Military hospital or the VA Medical System!!

It depends on the command... the command can stretch it out.
I was discharged in 1999 for hearing loss in my left ear... I couldn't pass my flight physical. They HELD the board... but my command (because I was on great terms with my CO) stretched it out for 8 months to take me to 15 years.

My brother was discharged immediately. The benefits, those took a long time to get worked out, but he got them in the end.

It all depends on the case load at D.C. My physical evaluation had a month turn arround time. In my case my command had no bearing on the time it took it all depends on the medical unit.

They process you out and give you treatements to the point they can't go any farther than they put you out.
In care of the VA.
