We have war vets that have no homes or food. Our elderly cannot afford the medications necessary for them to live healthy lives. In some European countries college is free if you have good grades. How would that be for an incentive? How can our youth afford to better themselves if their families are struggling? Yet celeberties go out and adopt kids from other counties and buy homes and God knows what else. When did we lose sight of the true "American Dream"?

I agree. And we are fighting wars in other countries to free people that really don't give a crap about us. Where is the thanks. Let's just stop the madness. And these idiots in DC are trying to start new wars - Iran. Enough is enough. I am good for kicking a little but when we have to but not at the expense of our own. Hey charity begins at home. We can't have welfare in our country yet we are building schools in Iraq. Who wrote us a check after Katrina? When was the last time the government built a school in your town. I'm mad at this crap to and to top it off where is the Thank You?

This doesn't have to be a one or the other issue. Our country is so rich. We don't ever know how rich we are. The poor in many countires would do anything to be poor here. The "American Dream" so many people think they want is to spend as much as they can and get as much stuff as they can, whether or not they need it. How many pair of shoes do you really need. Most people in the poorest countries make less money a day that we spend on one pair of shoes. Why do we think we can't take care of those in need here and anywhere they may be? How many of us complain about the wasteful spending our governemnt does but just vote for the incumbant at every election? What would happen if everyone in this country spend half of their entertainme nt dollars for one month and make a donation to Heifer International (they do projects here too). We'll stand in line for hours to buy a game player or concert tickets but we complain about helping others. If the American Dream means consumerism is more important than caring for "the least amoung us" then I think it is time that the "Dream" dies.

In U.S. there are scolarships also for good students.

You are right there is much misery and poverty in the U.S. There are places that are even more desperate and which have less than what is in the US

You are wrong about the American dream tho. The American dream mearely says that you have an opportunity. People DO go from rags to riches in the U.S. The problem is that most people don't. Read Death of a Sales man sometimes.

What I'd suggest to you, is donate to the American red cross. Each person can see their own needs.

Lots of celebraties HAVE helped people here in North America. (Shania Twain for example, came from Canada. She's helped kids in both Canada and US in the past. She's far from alone.)

I've have been wondering the same thing. People are just all about me, me, me. I don't understand why a celebrity would adopt from another country, when America has SO many orphans here. And, hopefully, the next president will help change the economy for the better. Because people really have loss sight of the bigger issues. And that needs to change!

We're trying to do both at the same time. I get what you're saying, and I *strongly* believe we need to take better care of our poor and our elderly. But I don't think we're not doing it because we're "worrying about everyone else." I think it's because we haven't made it a priority--and because a lot of people in this country "blame the victim" and believe the exceptions about welfare cheats instead of recognizing that anybody can be brought low without it always being their fault. Hopefully someday we'll realize how badly our treatment of the poorest among us reflects on the rest of the country.

and it is always the church groups that are trying to guilt trip the world int helping the needy elsewhere. well the church has the most wealth of any organisation. if the catholics have a billion followers, imagine the tithe once a week into its bank accounts.

if religion wants to help so much, why isnt it? because the poor starving africans wont be able to contribute to that fund. the church does not want converts, it wants direct debit.

I agree with the questioner here, in that we should start from within. start at home, then the suburb, then the city, then on and on. your local primary school could use your help (or volunteered services) more than you know.

They do. The Americans that have the power to "take care" of anyone ARE actually taking care of themselves and their own families and friends. It's just that the minorities and the "rest of us" are considered as low on the political totem pole as "everyone else." Get it? Those that need taking care of like you mentioned, the elders, war veterans, etc., aren't important to the rich white corporate men who only care about themselves and their own immediate families and money-making friends. They prove it daily. Unless you have something to offer the Americans with power, like money or status, they aren't really interested. Period. We need better lawmakers and decision-makers who are true and pure. Our system doesn't allow for it. We need people running our country who really care about people and not just power to help "their own" kind, (sometimes that includes other rich powerful important men in other countries) or get a big name from doing something that makes them look good to others in their circle of life. Sadly, American politicians and governors only help those in their inner circles, and will sell out every chance they get. The "American Dream" is alive and well - if you are already wealthy and powerful. And, to comment to someone else, taking care of (adopting or whatever) another child from ANYWHERE on the face of the earth is commendable and at least a positive movement. The biggest problem is indeed: ME ME ME from any place in the world.

America **is** taking care of Americans first.

well, certain special Americans are getting taken care of first.

The board of directors and the top executives of Haliburton are Americans, and they get taken care of very very very well. So too, the CEO's of big American corporations are making lots and lots of money by all the overseas things that the U.S. government has decided to do.

War is business. Big business. It looks like we are going over to other people's countries and spending resources and money that should be spent here? Look closer - and follow the money. At the top, somebody, always an American somebody, is getting rich.

Now, how about the average American? Little people like you and me don't count. We aren't getting taken care of - instead, our tax money is what is being taken from us and getting spent.

Spent on rich U.S. corporations who love making money overseas.

That is a good question. So much focus is put on people suffering in other countries, but we get next to no focus on the people in America. You could say people don't have enough money to support the people here, but people in this country donate to these charities, so that possibly can not be the issue. More focus should be put on our people. In order to help other countries, we need to help ours first. Plain and simple.
