A horse weighs so much that if it lays down too long their blood doesnt flow properly & they can get muscle cramps. Plus when they lay down that puts all of their weight on their upper body & it puts pressure on their lungs making it harder for them to breathe & it also puts alot of pressure on their organs & it can crush them.

In addition to all the other good answers the hooves are a nessecary part of the blood pumping system. If they are not applying and releasing pressure in the feet the blood pools into the leg and does not return to the heart. The do not have mucles in the lower leg to pump the blood like some other animals.

Horses have fluid in their bodies. That's why, if they lay down for too long, they die, because the fluids are not running proporly through their bodies.
When a horse is injured, it must stand up to heal because if a horse lays down for too long it will die.
Thats why a horse must stand to survive.
