Yes, I've wondered these same questions. Afterlife is used in both Christianity and Islam to provoke fear and obedience among its believers. This can be quite dangerous.

Sure some people would. I doubt very much if religion is their single greatest motivation. After all they believe they can go to heaven and enjoy the good life just by being a good Muslim. They don't have to kill themselves to go to heaven. Most likely their strongest motivation is the security promised their family.
Many Christians give no thought of the Devil and Hell. I was a Christian for eleven years before becoming an Atheists and I don't remember ever thinking of the devil or Hell except when I studied a passage in the bible specifically mentioning them. You shouldn't believe people dwell on the Devil and Hell only us Atheists do that. BB

I think some still would. As a Christian I don't live my life thinking about heaven and hell at all. The consequences for disobeying God are pretty much the same consequences you'd get with a lack or morals and values. Everything has a consequence :-)

Certainly, the picture you paint is scary, and a bad stain on religion. Please keep in mind that this is RELIGIOUS MANIPULATION. Manipulation can be guised under ANY circumstance. Fathers, Mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, governements, monarchies, communism, capitalism, and racism under a good manipulator can cause anyone to do bad stuff. Charles Mansion manipulated girls to do violent sickining killings from being good at manipulating.
The commonalities in all religion is for Humanities striving to be divine. To acomplish this, mankind has evolved from being an animal and acting soly as an animal and strived for divinity. This is why killings is looked down upon ... monogamous marriages ... honoring parents ... worshiping God ... doing all you can to stop acting like an animal and mature.
All of the Abrahamic religions do have causes and reasons for when defending their faith, teachings, and prohecies need aggression --- but these are rare.
"Hell" ... some very much need to understand this and reason it to acomplish their personal goal of sheding animal like qualities, and reaching for divinity.
Even Communists (who refuse religion) often speak of sheding animal behaviors to evolve into better human beings. I love the Star Trek shows where Captain James T. Kirk is always teaching advanced aliens this lesson too.

I don't think the kamikazi in WW2 were being promised some kind of an after life, I don't think it is accurate to imply that suicide bombers would not exist without religion

you may not bypass asking human beings on the internet the thank you to be a calm guy or woman, you recognize your self and you're able to understand the stuff that makes you happy. battling alongside with your individuals is taken into consideration one of the worst ingredient to do, reason in case you unfastened your individuals then you definately have not have been given any physique. Who cares in the experience that your a virgin, faster or later you basically isn't. Make your self happy, make an effort for your self and no-one else, loosen up, do issues which you desire to do, and picture concerning the destiny in a favorable way, purely think of valuable. you mustn't desire to die, every physique is going threw not undemanding factors of there existence, and ending your existence isn't probably fixing ****. you're able to end your misery yet reason a good number of human beings to be unhappy, depressed, mad. You by no skill understand, purely think of valuable, something stable will ensue(:

no...people are people and will hurt or commit evil if that's what they want to do, and then they hide behind their religion and use it as an excuse. Generally, religion puts a conscience in people as well as morals to live by. There's good and bad in anything. There are bad religious people, but there are also athiests, or those who believe in no God that turn out bad, hurt others, etc. Using religion as an excuse only allows the doer to get away with what they've done without taking responsibility for their actions.

Speaking as someone who does not believe in God I can tell you that it is in no way fear of post Morten punishment that keeps me from killing people and other morally wrong things. Religion DOES make people do bad things though (9/11, the crusades, the inquisition etc.)
A brilliant physicist once said what an insult to humanity religion is. Without it good people do good things and bad people do bad things. It takes religion to make good people do bad things.

WOW- so you are putting all "religions" in the same package. Religion is not what saves the person, and allows them to go to heaven. When you think about it, killing is against religions too, if you really believed in a higher being at all. Christianity is different than any other religion because it really is not a religion, it is a relationship. Jesus is the one who sacrificed Himself so that we can be in heaven. Even if hell and heaven were not mentioned I would want to give my life to Christ, because He gave His life for me, The ONE TRUE LIVING GOD- would not ask us to blow ourselves and other people up to save ourselves. That was already done on the cross.

Absolutely. I believe it's the fear of this higher power and the consequences of disobeying Him that leads people to find their "morals." Who determines what's right or wrong?
