Petroleum exploration was not developed (using drilling rigs) until the 1800's.

So, unless oil pooled at the surface, there was not much ancient use for it. That being said, what did ancients burn?

Animal fat and other oils from natural sources (whale oil was used up until it was replaced by petroleum).
