I was at some friends house the other day and every one was all worked up about Tom Cruise & the scientology thing. The article about him being the Christ wasn't writen by Cruise or the scientology "church". The scientologists don't believe Christ was God or the son of God (as far as I have read) so all that was said is Cruise will be the biggest spokes person of the religion. So what! Who cares?

The scientologist seem wholesome and kind. It's not like the Ku Klux Klan or the Nazis! Who cares if they make money? Don't we have more important things to get all worked up about?

I'm not a scientologist, I'm Christian and I like Cruises movies just fine. Get over it.!

You are right.
Actually the whole thing is a deliberate twist by the media ( Sun newspaper UK started it.)
The real issue is the media, and what sells. Their viewpoint is:
Who cares whether it actually happened or was actually said.
Let's create a fantasy that will sell .
They don't only apply this principle to Tom Cruise or to Scientology.
My viewpoint is, who cares about individuals who believe everything and anything the get from the media, because those kind of folk obviously prefer to accept delusion and fantasy over truth and fact. Let's hope they wake up soon, but meanwhile they are just a bunch of pawns in the wrong game.

I'm not personally invested in the faith or whatnot of Tom Cruise, or anybody I don't know for that matter. It is just Christians, and such, becoming angry that there is yet another "religious" faction taking away possible converts. I can't comment on the wholesomeness or kindness of any of the Scientologist, because I don't know much about them. I say that their beliefs/ideals are just as realistic as the next "religion's". And more power to them if they make money along the way. Christian churches all across the nation are doing it, so that's like the pot calling the kettle black, in my opinion.

What I have against Scientology is that it bleeds the regular person of money and time. You pay to move up the levels, or you work at one of their centers, or whatever it's called. I have read on the net, stories of people who were isolated from their families, and harassed when they left. It is, in my mind, a harmful cult.

Yeah, it has been made into a big deal lately... but actually, it was reported that David Miscavige, the current Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center (that means he's in charge of Scientology), had said he considers Tom Cruise the "messiah" of Scientology. So yes, if this is indeed true, the "Scientology church" really has likened Cruise to Christ.

And I care about Scientology because it's dangerous. It's not just blustering hate speech like the KKK is now... it's a real danger. I freely admit that many Scientologists are very good people. It's really not their fault that they were sucked into such a harmful cult. Scientology at it's core is absolutely and viciously self serving and unfortunately sometimes people are sucked into that agenda.

Consider these examples and then dare tell me that Scientology is really "no big deal":

• Operation Snow White – Under this program, Scientology operatives committed infiltration, wiretapping, and theft of documents in government offices. This program constituted the single largest infiltration of the United States government in history. Among the 11 prominent Scientologists convicted of this conspiracy was Mary Sue Hubbard, the wife of Scientology’s “prophet”.

• Operation Freakout - Their campaign of sabotage and violence against Paulette Cooper, the writer who published her research and findings on several cults, including Scientology. Scientology’s official plan: to frame Paulette, ruin her career and reputation and get her sent either to jail or psychiatric confinement.

• Fair Game - the Scientology policy detailing how the organization may confront and handle critics and perceived enemies. Here is a direct quote: "Enemies may be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed.”

• Violent Kidnapping - Lisa McPherson was a Scientologist, was involved in a car accident and resultantly became mentally unstable, was kidnapped by agents of Scientology, held against her will, refused proper psychiatric treatment and was allowed to STARVE TO DEATH.

• Jeremy Perkins - A CBS “48 Hours” special on the mentally disturbed son of Scientologist parents who refused to put him on the anti-psychotic drugs that would have stabilized him & prevented him from killing his own mother.

I agree. If people want to give their money to a rich church based on a SF writer's books, go ahead.

Note that I would feel the same way about religions claiming to be based on the words of god (like the Jews), Moroni (like the Mormons), Gabriel (like the Muslims), or anyone who is said to have said anything after they were supposedly dead (like the Christians).

Wholesome and kind?? I think that people haven't "gotten over it" because we are all generally sick of Cruise and his self-righteous, superior ranting. He doesn't know what the hell he is talking about and it's annoying as hell.

I absolutely agree. I mean, yeah, Scientology can be considered a scam, but by the same standard, so are Hollywood and casinos and professional sports (and, I suppose, televangelism). Everyone wants your money; it's up to you what to do with it...

I never said I was worried about it. I just think it goes to show that people will fall for anything when faith is involved. They'll even pay money for it!
