Why does nearly everyone want free software? Do they not understand that if you do not pay money for an item you end up paying with time, stress, and usually they end up spending money on other things to fix what the free thing did to thier computer.

For several reasons.

1./ One off use of a program e.g. if you download a .rar or .tz for the first and only time no-one wants to pay just to open a file which may even be corrupt or unopenable.

2./ Lack of funds for such a program, software manufactures do charge far too much for many programs. Look at adobe acrobat pro for example the ability to convert to pdf from that is the only reason my company wanted it but some freeware I found converted it quicker anyway.

3./ To test if they really want or need that particular program, photoshop, paintshop pro etc etc, all have many different functions which many users do not require.

4./ Without freeware and shareware we would be paying microsoft prices for everything, the free programs which work well actually help to keep prices of commercial programs in check.

It depends on the software and the developer. Some developers are happy to create free software. Others might want to see what the market is like and the reaction to their software. Free software can be useful especially if you don't want to fork out $50+ just for one little piece of software (although most online are a lot cheaper!).
However like you said, some software do require regular upgrades and patches to fix bugs.

Look, the free soft is good for those people who do not have much money, an original software is very expensive , knowing that in Internet, you can download it for free, not necessarily in the streets, but is very good, everything depends how hacker and how cracker you are.
