I have been trying to figure out what my outcome may be. I have an apmt on Friday but meanwhile I am very scared. 10 years ago I had a root canal...never had any problems with it. As of October when I had my last root canal (next to the 10yr old RC), both teeth have been tap sensitive. Dentist took xrays 2 times. See's no infection or problem other than the old RC appears too blurry to see if it was done correctly. Is it possible that there is an infection occurring due to the trauma from the RC but not the root it'self? I mean, bruising? What could be wrong? One has a post and one does not. I would really rather avoid oral surgery.... I have spent all my savings on this last RC. Any advice would be appreciated. That old RC is 10 years old. From what I can see it doesn't look infected....neither does the other RC. I see no abcess at all. But, putting pressure on my face in that area is a bit tender. Please can a pro please advise. Thank you.

Hi Angelina. I have 5 root canals with similar problems. And, like you, the dentists cannot identify the problem. Recent medical research (which apparently dentists don't read!) has found that the materials used in root canals can induce chronic, low-grade inflammation in the associated tissues (bone, gums, etc.). My guess is this is the cause of your and my pain problems. It may be the chronic inflammation causes instability in the tooth socket, thus creating pain with pressure. As far as I know, the only solution is removal of the tooth. Sadly, I see my dentist tomorrow to begin discussions on the removal of my five root canals and replacement with implants.

Best wishes and good luck.

ANGELINA,

YOU DIDN'T SAY WHICH ONE HAS THE POST. POST HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO SPLIT ROOTS. IF THIS HAPPENED, EXTRACTION IS THE ONLY SOLUTION. PUTTING PRESSURE ON A TOOTH WHICH HAD RECENT ROOT CANAL TREATMENT CAN MAKE IT SENSITIVE FOR SOMETIME. THIS USUALLY SUBSIDES UNEVENTFULLY.
ONE OF THE EASIEST WAYS T DETERMINE IF A TOOTH HAS A FRACTURED ROOT IS IF THERE IS PAIN WHENTHE TOOTH IS MOVED SIDE TO SIDE. THE DENTIST CAN ALSO DO FURTHER TESTS TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS A ROOT FRACTURE.
