My husband thinks that I actually take effort to push myself into being really depressed and negative. It is not what I want and I am not sure why I feel that way, except that I worry about everything. I take medicine, but I just don't see my future being very bright. I feel like I am in a rut, although others see me as having everything. I love being manic because I hate being depressed and lethargic. I recently told my doctor that I was so tired of being depressed and that I wanted to be put on a medicine to make me manic all the time. He told me that he understood but he reminded me that when you are way up that you soon come down and it makes it all worse. He said that an even balance was of course the goal. I don't see that as my goal, because I am not evened out for very long. I either have a clear perspective and energy and goals or I am so down that I feel guilty, helpless, and lost with no hope. So to answer your question, it is easier to be down in a way, although I am not sure that would be my choice. I do love the manic side and would prefer that one, although it does get me into trouble with my thinking.

A lot of people have this. They do have a legitimate mental health issue, but just can't seem to get the right treatment because of their addiction to their misery. Most people have treatable mental health issues. Only those with the more serious ones need more help. But even then, they are treatable IF you want to get better and can be completely honest with your therapist/counselor.
