I've heard & am sure you have to be carefu which ones you use together as your PC can crash. It once happened to me, I had an anti-virus & downloaded an anti-spyware that had anti-virus as well & 2 anti-virus programs clashed & crashed my PC,

Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

Yes spybot is good but you should have more than that as evey program will find differnt things.
All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.
AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/...
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Spybot is fine as long as you update it regularly and don't forget to immunize; it has a secure file shredder too and resident protection in the form of a bad download blocker and system protection (tea timer) - look under tools>resident. I'd also use Spywareblaster which gives you added protection; remember to update it.

Personally, I'd avoid Spywareguard although some recommend it.
McAfee Siteadvisor is very useful - it alerts you if the site you are visiting or downloading from has hidden nasties - available for internet explorer and firefox
http://www.siteadvisor.com/
If you are comfortable using more sophisticated antispyware programmes, then for a freebie you can't beat Spyware Terminator - free resident protection, HIPS and on boot file removal -
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/spyware-terminator/spywareterminator.html
And not forgetting Winpatrol with dear old Scotty!
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/WinPatrol/winpatrol.html
I've used all the programmes above together without any serious issues - overkill perhaps but I'm a control freak....

I used Spybot and Adaware for several years to supliment my Norton antivirus, but the latest edition of Norto Internet security will not allow Spybot, and uninstalled it. I still use Adaware, that picks up malware that Norton misses

I downloaded AVG and as Windows has its own firewall, it seems to be fine. I originally had Norton but it made my wireless connection so slow, I was advised to change. It is certainly a lot quicker now.
