As me mates Captain Bogg & Salty say, "Eat a lime!"

Vitamin C is the "active ingredient," so really any citrus fruit would work. But limes were the traditional way that the English would prevent scurvy, which is why "Limey" is a slang word for Englishmen to this day.

Captain Bogg and Salty, for those who don't know, is a Portland-based pirate rock band. Their concerts are LOADS of fun, and limes figure heavily in several of their songs, including their signature tune "Pieces of Eight," which you can hear (and see) in the music video on their Web site.

Indeed, any sort of citrus fruit. Mainly lemons. Of course, most reports are that chefs used citrus noted less cases of scurvy. but did not make the connection until much later. If you have ever read the book "Napoleon's Buttons", it actually goes rather in depth about Vitamin C deficiency and the Caribbean citrus crops and such, a very good read I would recommend it.

Eating oranges. It was the lack of vitamin C that caused Scurvy. At least that is what I remember.

Limes or citrous fruit (anything with Vit C). Thats where the name Limy (spellings off) comes from for Brits. Its a name for the old treatment given to the sailors.

It was drinking lime juice without sugar but I think that anything that is filled with Vitamine C will work.
