I just adopted a cat three days ago, and for the past two nights, he won't shut up. He's a pretty vocal cat, but he was basically quiet in the evening. As soon as the lights go out, this cat won't shut up. I haven't been able to sleep in two days because of the howling. Is he just getting used to things? Will he grow out of this phase? Any tips on what I should do? I won't be able to keep him if he keeps this up? Please help!

This may sound strange, but can you leave a light or two on for a few days? Maybe he is just getting used to his surroundings.

Is he able to come and sleep with you? He might just be lonely. I would think that in a few days once he gets settled into a routine, he'll probably calm down quite a bit.

I have 2 cats, both of which always have something to say. They'll start a ruckus if they don't have their perfect spot on the bed. But usually just a hug and kiss will settle them right down and they'll cuddle up with me. But if your cat was in the shelter (or wherever you adopted him from) for any length of time, he might just not be used to the quiet. It might be like the stories you hear when people get out of prison and can't sleep because there's no noise and people yelling all the time.

Could you possibly leave the TV on or something to just create a little background noise and see if that helps? My cats also like the screensavers on the computer monitor. There are also toys that let you put treats inside them and as the cat rolls the thing around, treats come out. This might be something to try just to keep him busy long enough for you to get to sleep.

That's the best I've got though. Hopefully you guys can work something out. Keep in mind though that it usually takes an animal about 2 weeks to be comfortable in a new environment.

Best Wishes :-)

He is adjusting to the adoption and scary new settings. If he is not neutered, have that done. He may be smelling a female in heat. Keep a light on somewhere in the house at night until he's not so scared. Touch him a lot and be extra calming and reassuring in your tone of voice. This won't last long. Congratulations on the new addition to your family.

He is probably lonely. Before you adopted him he probably had his brothers and sisters to play with and a mother to snuggle with If this is the case he needs to be wore out before you go to bed. Play with him for a good hour then snuggle then feed him some canned food, and go to bed. He will be tired out from playing, snuggled and have a full belly that knocks my cat out for awhile. Another thing let him sleep with you.

Wait a second....how old is he?
He just might be horny!

No,seriously.I have had many cats in my life and every female and male cat who was ever been in heat will make long and noisy meows especially at night, because thats when they usually go around looking for a mate!
Has he been near any female cats? Are there any femalecats near the premises? He might be doing his mating call.

Did he used to be an outdoor cat? Cats are nocturnal. Or he might just need some TLC. Like when a puppy will yip and whine when left alone.

feed him well, or give him milk (liquid) as on our experience, after we gave our cat a bowl of milk, they go on very deep sleeping. give a try.
