Many doctors will tell you that sex is a good option for causing dilation. Sperm contains prostaglandins which are hormones that are released during normal labor. However aside from medically inducing there is really no guaranteed way to start labor, when the body is ready it is ready, and usually not before. A lot of times trying to rush labor only prolongs it...

DON'T give her caster oil as suggested by a previous answerer, that's for sure. That's an old wives tale and it's dangerous to your unborn baby.
Do have intercourse. The act as well as the sperm chemistry are catalysts for cervix dialation. Other things are her cleaning the house. It's called the "nesting instinct" and most women do it naturally, but some need to choose to do it. The cleaning will send a signal to her cervix to use her physical labor as a sign that her nest is ready. It's not a joke, even though it sounds kind of strange!
Oh, and just so you guys know, once the baby is born, you won't be getting much sleep so don't rush it and get a surplus of sleep gathered up while you can!! lol ;o)
Have a happy and healthy delivery and an early congratulations on your new baby.

I tried the following, I'm not sure if it was one of these that worked but the next day I had a baby!!!
1. Nipple Tweaking, rubbing her nipples produces a similar sensation to a mild contraction so doing this loads can trigger it. or using a breast pump a few times a day can do the very same thing. The theory is that oxytocin, a hormone that causes contractions, is released in the body when the breasts are stimulated. The usual recommendation is 15 minutes of continual stimulation on each nipple each hour for several hours.
2.) bouncing up and down on a birthing ball - helps baby to move down and can then put pressure on cervix.
3. Tens machines are advised not to be used before birth as they trigger labour!!!! yeah i say
4. Eat Pineapple it contains the enzyme bromelain which is thought to help to soften the cervix and so bring on labour.
The other know methods, bumpy car rides, loads of walking, curries, raspberry leaf tea, licorice, caster oil,
&.....Sex as means of getting labour started is thought to work in three ways: firstly the movement may help to stimulate the uterus into action; secondly, sex can trigger the release of oxytocin, the 'contraction' hormone; thirdly, semen contains a high concentration of prostaglandins which help to ripen, or soften, the neck of the womb (cervix) ready for it to dilate when labour starts.
remember if all else fails.........Wear your best knickers (sod's law will ensure that your waters break in them).
Good luck hope you have your baby soon!!!!

Have her talk with her OB/GYN. He/She might be able to induce labor. However, this doesn't always work because her body might not be ready yet. That's what happened to me. In the meantime, don't try anything you've heard from any old wives tales. Some of those old wive's tricks are harmful to the baby. Try and make her as comfortable as possible, & keep reminding her that "Good things come to those who wait". Best of luck to you and your wife. Hope your baby is as much a blessing as mine is!

I've had four kids - sex brought on labour each time. It's terribly uncomfortable - but it does work. You can also try raspberry leaf tea. You can also ask your doctor to scrape your membranes - this helps also - it gets things going. God bless your new little one!

Have her walk a lot and have a lot of sex with her. This really does work. I know it is uncomfortable but sperm has something which make labor come on.

37 weeks is not far, please wait for the baby's sake. the baby will let her know it is ready to face the world when she goes into labor on her own.
