When you are at school, put him in a kennel cab with a sheet over it (kind of cab he can't pull a sheet into it) and put a Kong in there with him. If you are in school all day, see if you can get someone to take him out around lunch time for a walk and play time and potty break.
At night, let him sleep in the cab next to your bed. Again, put the sheet over it and that may help him to stop.
When mine were potty trained they slept in the bed by me and they didn't cry at all... ; )

i think you have to be a little tough with him. By getting up and comforting him you are showing him that if he cries he gets attention - so he will probably keep on doing it. If you ignore him then eventually you will break him of the habit and he will stop.

This is much easier to say than do - of course. Plus you have to be sure he is not crying for a valid reason such as he has no water or has nowhere to pee.

I had the same sort of thing last week with my 3 year old dog - he was howling because there was a storm. It was heartbreaking to hear but I did not give in cos I knew he was safe and did not want him to get the habit of doing it every storm that comes around.

You could let him sleep in the bedroom, but dogs love routines and I bet he will want to stay there even when he becomes adult.

I had a Rott/Pitt mix that used to do the very same thing and it used to drive me crazy, and he would start just when I was falling asleep. This is what finally worked for me, i got a radio nothing fancy and i find a am talk radio station not music and left it on. And the first night i tried it he was quiet, I actually got worried and went and checked on him and he was out cold sleeping. Then i asked a trainer friend of mine and he said that They howl and whine because the house gets to quiet and the noise of the talk radio makes him think someone is home. I have also heard a old fashioned tick tick clock will work, but i found the radio did the trick for him. The idea of the shock collar is a good one, but it will make him not bark either and if you have a intruder you wont know. Hope this works as well for you as it did for me!!

Get an old style clockwork alarm clock (must have an audible tick tock) and place it under the dogs blankets in its basket, it imitates the heart beat of the mother.

Have some comforting toys for the dog to chew on.

If the puppy is pining for it's mother get an old towel and rub it over the mother to get the scent. if it's pining for human company leave a radio on in the room quietly and let it sleep on an item of clothing you have worn recently.

It might pay to do all of the above at the same time, just to find out why it's unhappy.

8 weeks old is quite young for a puppy to leave it's mother for some breeds.

Unfortunately, this is simply an issue of maturity. That is, he will grow out of it. I have two pups. One cried at night a lot, the other was fine (when they were in their crates). So for the one who cried, I slept with him for a few nights to reassure him. This helped a lot. But I still needed him to get used to being alone (in his crate), so it just took time for him to mature and get used to it. Give it maybe 3 weeks.

However, to help, make sure the pup's crate is soft, play some soft music, give him a toy or treat, etc. Some people suggest using a clock as it helps simulate the heartbeat of the mother. At 8 weeks, though, the pup wouldn't be sleeping with mom any more anyway, so this might not work. Your pup is just not used to being away from his littermates - he needs to adjust. So be patient.

I know this isn't much help, but as I wrote, I have two pups now and this is what I did. Even my vet said that sometimes you just have to ignore the crying until he gets used to being on his own. But if it's horrendous, sleep with him a few nights (especially now that you just got him) and that will help a lot.

Trust me, 3 weeks goes by fast, so don't worry. :-)

Eight weeks old is very young to be left along. Most breeders won't even sell you a puppy that young. Plus a puppy needs to allowed to relieve itself every 2-3 hours. I'd suggest either having someone watch the dog or take it back to the breeder if you don't have time to spend with the puppy.

Get him a kennel big enough for him to stand and move around in as an adult... Put in a nice soft blanket or towel, food and water, a chew, and at night an alarm clock that ticks. Put him in the kennel when you leave for school, but you have to come home for lunch and let him out, then put him in until you get back at night. You don't want him peeing/pooing in his kennel. At night play with your puppy until it's his bedtime, and put him in the kennel. It becomes his den and he feels more at home. Make sure he's gets lots of love when you're at home...and he'll be just fine

Warp an alarm clock in a towel and let him sleep with it. They think that the ticking sound is their mom.

Also don't give a puppy (or any dog) stuffed animals because they can chew them and swallow the stuffing and die. My brothers brother in law had a puppy die from a bowel obstruction because it ate a stuffed animal.

I had a little one like that and we got a cardboard box and put it right next to the bed -- I laid on my stomach with my arm dangling in the box. She started sleeping right away and if she woke up, you just dangle again. She will sniff and 'kiss' you and usually go back to sleep. While you are at school -- someone needs to keep her company and play with her. If nobody is home, make sure a radio is going and give her an old (NOT washed - so it smells like you) shirt of yours to lay on.

try buying a big dog stuffed animal and put it in his bed or crate or whatever when you aren't there. that's what i did with my dog and it worked. or you could keep a radio on so the dog thinks there is someone around them we also did this with my dog and it worked pretty well. she would cry every once in a while but not every night
