someone gave me a 2 yr female akita and immediately she and my 10 month male australian shephard began butting heads. they go at it like two wolves you see on national geographics.

i always keep one in a 20 ft cage so they dont hurt each other. but they still try to bite each other through the cage.

the problem is both are around 80 pounds each so it's hard for me to seperate them when they are fighting. i spray water and smack their behinds but they just turn around to try to bite me. which is scary cause they have huge teeth.

the aussie has been nothing but sweet and submissive to me since he was 2 months old but he actually tried to bite me when i tried to stop the fight.

so what can i do to make them get along?

Never try to stop a dog fight yourself!!!!! You could easily get seriously injured or even killed by two 80lbs dogs!

The ideal situation would have been to have someone else with the new dog, meet you and your dog at a neutral location, with both dogs being on leads. You're going to need another person to help you with the other dog and it will take time and effort.

I'd pick a large, open area where the dogs can see each other, but can still be at a distance. Make the dogs heel, and then give them corrections when they start showing behaviors like growling or focusing on the other dog too much. Gradually get them closer and closer each day you do this.

This is a very simple version. It will take a lot of time and a lot of patience. You may be better off finding another home for the Akita.

The Aussie needs to drop some of the weight. Eighty pounds is way over weight. You nearly got bit this time and could get seriously hurt the next time trying to break them up. The Akita would be gone.

Ahhh, question? Are they both fixed? If so, I'd be concerned. If not, is your puppy fighting the new dog before trying to gain your undivided attention? Or after you play with her? If not perhaps she is beginning a heat cycle you haven't noticed yet. Your male is old enough for that to gain his attention, and fast. She doesn't like it, he doesn't care, so they fight. She isn't ready if you can't notice anything yet, but he wouldn't know that. Let it ride low for a while, if it persists without any sign of a heat cycle, or both are fixed, seek out a professional dog behaviorist, if anyone can stop this unwanted behavior they can. Get both fixed if they are not already. I wish you luck, this isn't a good situation for anybody!

You might not want to but if I were you I would just get rid of one of them...give them to a relative, that way you can still see it but not just have it around the dog you decide to keep...cant really make dogs like each other... or any other animal for that matter...

Get yourself a professional trainer, and quick. This is way out of your league.

And stop smacking them and spraying water at them. They already have adrenaline going and they're both pissed. Don't you think that assaulting them in that state is a really bad idea?

Duh.

Keep them away from each other until you can get a trainer to your place to get it sorted out.
