Proverbs 22:6-Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

The scriptures were written by human beings and contain much that I accept as generally true. Proverbs 22:6 is one example. A child who learns discipline and respect when young will benefit from those lessons when he comes of age. There's no guarantee that he will turn out to be a good man, but the chances are much greater than they are for the child who received no such upbringing. Another example of something written in scripture that I accept as true is the Golden Rule, which can be found in the writings of many different traditions, including Confucianism. I don't toss away anything just because it's written in scripture, but neither do I accept everything written in scripture without question BECAUSE it's written in scripture. I accept it because experience proves it to be true.

You know what, I was "trained up as a child" in the Christian way and I sure as hell departed. So no, I don't believe or agree with that scripture.

When will you ever learn how to spell.

"Athiest" is not a word in the dictionary.

Did you mean "atheist?" Ahhh....now I know what you're blubbering.

As for "his" scripture. Is there any proof that that is "his" very own words. You do know that the Bible was not originally written in English, right?

I prefer confucian proverbs though, thank you very much.

I think that ancient writer had some common sense advice about child rearing....some ideas never get stale.

What does that have to do with my non-belief in god, or that the bible is his 'inspired' word?

I was born into a fundie christian home, and was raised that way. I'm now an atheist, but also a good son, loyal friend, upstanding and respected member of my community.

What point did you think you were making?

I do not agree with that scripture. "Train up a child in the way he should go", who are you to decide the way the child must go? What is the path you think he should travel differs to the one he actually wants to travel?
Basically this sentence is saying, "teach your child that God is real and he will believe it all his life. Do not give him the chance to make up his own mind with a clear sight to the truth."

I got some scripture for you.

Revelation, chapter 7 "...standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four wind...
Revelation, chapter 20 ...which are at the four corners of the earth, that is, Gog and Magog..."

I was raised as a devout Christian. I even entered the studies for the ministry. I was a signed, saved, sealed, convicted Born-Again Christian... I'm an atheist now.

Kinda disproves that proverb.

Wes agree when things that are fair and moral, but we still do not belive in god. Having a sense of god is different from having a sense of morality.

you are incorrect, atheists as a whole only think that there is no god, anything else is individual, you are wrong to state that atheists collectively don't "believe in god's word", what they think about the bible depends on the person in question
