Because the American people are ridiculous. If something isn't blantently obvoius then it could possibly be something else.
" An unmarked car is devoid of any visible markings or equipment which can identify it as a police vehicle, making it appear identical to a regular car of the same model. The siren is hidden and the police lights are placed behind either the windshield or grille as well as the back window. Lights are sometimes placed on the front of rear or side-view mirrors, as well."
I think this is ridiculous. We can't see the oxygen the in the, air but everyone knows it is there.
It is scientifically proven there was water on Mars at one point, which means there could have been life, but noone beilves this either.

There are actually three level of police protection.
1. Is that people obey the laws and if everyone did, there would be no reason for Police.
2. High visibility, have plenty of Marked cars out and about and anyone thinking of doing a crime, will think twice before doing it.
3. Good old fashioned police work after the fact.
Crime does happen, and cant always have a cop on every street corner. Most cities have about 5,000 people for every officer on the road. Not good odds don't you think??
In some states, Law enforcement has other markings like, Connecticut, green light on each end of the light bar.

Oh, I was so glad when they finally updated the San Antonio police cars.
For me, I like seeing them around town, because I always feel safer... so it's good to see them even from far away.
San Antonio's police cars are even prettier than the one in your pic. I tried to find a weblink to a photo but I couldn't. The San Antonio is written nice and big... really cool looking.
On a busy, trafficky day, where all the cars seems to blend toegther, it's nice to see something different. I like the cool design.

Each Police Chief is allowed to 'create' his or her own style. They are naturally going to try and out do the Chief before them, so we get a little fancier with each change. It is sort of their way of leaving their mark on the department. One of our Chief's wanted the side of the patrol car to be very reflective, so that at night when the lights hit the side of the patrol unit you would have no doubt that 5o was patrolling the streets, where as another Chief who was only there for a short time wanted to confuse the public and the name blended in with the stripes. It is all a matter of style and taste.

Actually, it is one of the few things that Hollywood accurately depicts. It is illegal to portray oneself as a policeman, unless you really are. Thus, if a vehicle advertises itself as 'Police' one can be sure it is, in fact, a law enforcement authority. It's the same as other countries using a particular symbol. We use the word. It is an excellent deterrent and easily identified.

It's a brand, if you will, with a purpose. The cars become immediately recognizable, making it easier for people to identify police. This is helpful when a citizen needs police assistance, and when a police officer is directing a motorist to pull over, etc.
It also makes it harder for imposters to pose as Police. If they used standard lettering, you could make a cop car with rub on letters from Wal-mart.

They're not all cheesy like that one. Writing POLICE on the car is a crime deterrent.
But there are unmarked police cars, too.
Also, wouldn't it be true that Hollywood is copying the police, not police are copying Hollywood?

Primary Deterrent. If you see the cop car, you are less likely to break the law.
And, unlike the person before me, I do not believe it has anything to do with opression, rather than protection.

Maybe they should have "taxi" written there instead?
I've been to Italy, Germany, Canada, England, Switzerland etc. and they all do.
It gets people's attention....it's supposed to.
