After all, they are likely to have their own religions.

Note that I am not talking about a physical encounter by discovery through a program like SETI.

I think the government would have to keep it a secret if they could. There would be mass panic. Religion on our planet would really be in trouble and everybody would probably be rethinking their beliefs. I'm sure that the "aliens" would be much more advanced if they could come here and know about us when we know nothing of them. At first, there would be an increase in suicide, crime, and just general anarchy. In time, hopefully the aliens could teach us things and make us become better than we ever have been. What that would do to people's belief systems remains to be seen. It would all depend on the events that transpired. It could be the dawn of a new age or it could be the end of civilization as we know it.

We have yet to discover terrestrial intelligence. Mankind is of such a mind that we could not appreciate nor value an intelligent extra-terrestrial. They would most likely be destroyed in some bizarre experiment and autopsied so that we could continue to believe that we are the superior beings.

Of course it would complicate things, and we would notice a lot of other things before we get a chance to know about their spirituality.
Mary Doria Russell has a thought provoking and enjoyable take on this, in her books "The Sparrow" and "Children of God." On the discovery of a civilized planet, the Jesuits send a group of people---not all Catholic or even religious at all--and the results are fascinating and decidedly mixed.

No. Believe it or not, but the Bible teaches that when God created the universe, He also created some kind of [some were spirit beings, some were not spirit] inhabitants on the planets, so what difference does it make? I'll not tell you where it tells this, and let you have the fun of looking it up as a learning experience. You non-believers may learn something and become a believer.

I would hope that space traveling 'aliens' would be advanced enough to know that religion and superstition have no place in a civilized society. If they don't realize this then we do have a problem; especially if they use religion the way us earthlings have used it, the problem for us is really one of survival. We throughout history we have used religion to enslave our neighbours, take power from governments, convert under the penalty of death...conquer indigenous peoples and take their lands...... Naw, there can't be another planet anywhere that still believes in gods...that just dosen't make any sense.............I hope!(?)

yeh E.T. are actually demons. scientific explaination for demons. Same phenomina is reported in haunted houses as in sightings. From passing threw wall, smells of sulpher and repugnance , people acting weird, missing time, electronic gadget disturbances, objects moving by them selves as evident by the movie close encounters o f the third kind when the screw comes out of heat register, and Toys moving.

so yah demons would severly complicate things

given the distances and timescale involved in this very large universe I'd say an encounter is unlikely. That is IF 'they' are out there. Again, the universe is very, very large so it is impossible to rule out the possibility alien life exists. Maybe even likely; not enough data.

Any creature sufficiently advanced to make the trip to our planet would have evolved to the point of no longer requiring religion. So, it would be fun watching them unleash their ray guns on Christians who tell them that only their truth is the real truth!!

i don't think that the discovery of extra-terrestrial intelligence will complicate things. but you never know what will happen till it happens.

No, I think we would refocus our attentions and priorities.
we would do more self examination as to how we look to our interstellar neighbors.
GOD would not be more puzzling than he is.
We would be pushed to one world order and leader.

Yes the topic of religion would definitely arise. I can't see it effecting main liners at all
