Most UK Police Forces are currently facing a funding crisis. The new Home Office buzz word is "Neighbourhood" Policing. What funds do exist for Forces to spend will be directed towards the recruitment of PCSOs which is arguably policing by the back door but they are at the heart of neighbourhood policing. Expect to see fewer coppers on the beat in the future and more PCSOs pounding the streets. Mounted units are typically used for major events and patrols in hot spot areas. Its debateable as to how effect PCSOs are in terms of preventing and detecting crime but the disbandment of your local mounted section is akin to the cutbacks facing pretty much all Roads Policing (Traffic) units. The Home Office, ACPO and most Police Authorities believe that deterence and high profile policing can now be achieved rather inexpensively with a couple of PCSOs as opposed to a Copper and his horse. Remember a Copper has to undergo two years of basic training then a six week Mounted Course, not to mention the training his nag is put through; as opposed to PCSOs who receive around six weeks training before being put on the beat. I blame Labour for politicisation of the Police in the UK.

i completely agree with you! but this does not reflect the opinions of all 52 police forces in The UK, in fact there are many forces including North Wales for example that are planning to put a money into developing a mounted section.
It has nothing to do with the government as your local police authority that decide what they will spend there money on.
Judging by the general opinion on this issue from other Yahoo users I would suggest putting together a petition and presenting it to your chief constable and police Authority.

I was a policeman for thirty years and cant remember a single arrest by mounted branch. They were great for public order situations but they are not common from a cost effective prospective they are very expensive and the money could be better spent on officers who have a more varied role and give a better and wider service.

Afraid you'll have to get used to it. The Govt. doesn't seem to want to spend on the important things like their constituants needs... they are too tied up with Human Rights (usually the Criminal's) or whatever the latest, trendiest "legislation for change" is. In Northern Ireland, the Police "force" has been cut in half over the last five or so years. Better public service?
Best thing you can do is get as much local support as you can and lobby the local MP as publically as you can. At least you will get your say! It's maybe about time we started demanding service from our elected representatives!
Good luck.

Your very right people have no problem in assaulting officers but they do think twice about messing with mounted officers. They are invaluable at public events, football matches etc...
The government can only cut the police force back so far before the country starts to suffer badly.

Well, different country, but same issues... :) government cuts on things that actually earn their keep!
Why not write to the NYPD and other large departments that have mounted police and ask them how they justify their cost??? That might give you some ideas on how to approach the people making this bad decision to change their minds? Worth a try. Good luck. Suz

During my stint, the horses got more respect than any officer on foot. Personally think they should be used more often instead of getting shot of them! They love their job, are fantasically trained and can move a crowd alot quicker than any van full of police!!!!

But when it comes down to it it is all down to money. We "want" all these things but are not prepared to pay for it.
We need a vast increase in tax immediately to increase police, prison, immigration staff, customs, income tax...
And will it happen? No we will just flounder along tinkering at the edges...
