I drive the prescribed speed limit on most freeways in California (65mph) yet I'll see cars zooming past me. What's the point of the speed limit if no one ever follows them?

The point of the speed limit is to make revenue for the state and city. (If it we're really about safety, they could have a minimum $5000 fine for speeding... which would end the urge to speed immediately once and for all.)

I feel safest going the speed of traffic, regardless of what the signs say. I don't know that having no limits is the best idea... I'm picturing a bit of a free-for-all, but I definitely think some limits are unreasonable given the conditions of the road. Perhaps 'recommended speeds' would be better. And cops could still make money for the state/city by ticketing tailgaters.... I'd bet money that tailgaters cause more accidents than speeders.

the speed limit is there so the law enforcers have a recourse for punishment if needed. if there was no law, there would be too few dollars coming into the highway patrol budget. Freeway speeds seem a little low, the cars nowadays are so much more stable and safe than earlier cars. Some states have raised speeds on freeways that are lonely and unpopulated to 70 or 75 but not very much.

The point of the speed limit is to keep people safe. With the speed limit in place, people that drive so fast and recklessly can be held accountable for endangering their safety and the safety of others. If people could drive on the highway at > 100 MPH, then many people would feel too intimidated to drive on the highway. Driving should be open to everybody without feeling their life is in danger. It's a way to get from A to B, not an extreme sport.

I doubt if we should totally abolish speed limits, but perhaps instead set the speed limits at more reasonable speeds (higher ones) that the roads were designed for. Additional higher speed limits should be set for highway driving between the hours of midnight and 5am.

Two reasons one is for safety and the other is for the government to get more money when they catch the speeders and give them the speeding ticket they deserve. So if there were no speed limit there would be way more accidents.

Because if there wasn't a speed limit the deaths would triple as people would have no limit inside their heads of the speed they should be going

1) Rules are made to be broken. That's why you see people speed.

2) Rules are made to help maintain some form of order.

3) Eventually all speeders get caught. And while you keep you license and the privledge to drive, that person empties his bank account trying to keep his.

no, but we should raise them a bit. half of the people on the road are stupid enough without having to worry about not hitting anyone or anything. i say that streets that are now 35 should be 50, current 50's should be changed to 70, freeway should be 100.

however, residential streets should stay at 25 because it's for a good reason (i don't think i have to explain it).

You'll always have people who will just do what they know they shouldnt, you cant win. But normal people will stick to the right limits, unless they are in a hurry and think they wont get caught !!
