one quote says "I no longer exist for others"

the other quote says "memory links us with the dead, but it depends on us whether that memory is living or dead.”

the last one was "God’s silence allows evil; mans perversion engenders fear"

i came across these three quotes while reading a book called One generation after.. and i was confused with what they were trying to say?

Here's what they mean to me:

1. By no longer existing for others, you exist for yourself. You don't do things simply to please others, you do them because *you* know they are right. You don't dress to impress "Jane" down the street, you dress to impress because you like the way you look in those clothes.

2. Often, all we have of the dead are our memories of them. On a deeper note, from the experiences of the dead, we learn from them. It is up to you personally to keep that memory alive by thinking about it and applying those memories to life - to cherish those memories. If we learned nothing from those who came before us, if we forget who they were and what they meant, it's as if they never existed. The memory has died along with the life.

3. When a god is a silent god, no 'higher power' can regulate what is good and what is evil. By not condemning evil, the god is thereby allowing it.
The perverison of man creates fear. We fear that which we do not understand and we fear things that are not normal. Whether this is crime or homosexuality, perversion brings fear.

Here's what I think...
1) It means the speaker is living for himself, or for some greater cause, no longer just trying to make others happy.
2) Think of a living memory as a video in your mind, and a dead memory as a still photograph-either one will make you think of that person, but it may have a different emotional effect on you. I would say a living memory tends to bring out stronger emotions.
3) The first clause implies that people often ignore God or God's will and act in evil ways because God isn't physically present-it's easy to pretend He's not there or conveniently forget about something that's not concrete or right in front of you. The second clause means that those evil things that people do still hurt others & cause them pain & fear. So, I would summarize the third one as saying, just because you don't hear a booming voice from the sky commanding you not to do something doesn't mean that it isn't wrong, and you should still consider the effects of your actions.
Hope that helps.

I no longer exist for others means that you no longer live your life for other people, you do what makes you happy.

Memory links us...means that you will always have memories about the past, but it's up to you whether it's in the past or the present, better yet, on whether you still live in the past and don't move on and let the past be just that, the past.

God's silence...We make our own decisions, God is not there to stop the evil, we create it. Our determination to continue this evil is frightening.

I NO LONGER EXIST FOR OTHERS - The person feels that no-one really sees him or cares about him, no-one notices him no atter what he says or does.

MEMORY LINKS US.................. - We remember the dead in our memories of that person but if we don't remember them or think about them then that person and the memory is truly dead. If you think about that person then the memory is alive so whether the memory is alive or dead depends on whether you remember or not.

GODS SILENCE................... - Since evil acts are committed and God does not say or do anything in punishment it could be said he allows evil to happen.
MAN'S PERVERSION............. - The bad things we do like mugging, rape, murder etc makes others live in fear

Memory links us to the dead, that means that our loved ones that are dead still live in our memory and that memory can be good or living or bad and dead..
The other 2 quotes would be interpreted by reading the whole book and understanding the context.

"I no longer exist for others" Means that I am my own individual. I am able to detach myself from those who may be too dependant on me.

"Memory links...." Once a person has passed on (died) the only life that they have on this earth now lives within the memories of those the dead have left behind. If we forget the dead then the connection to their lives on this earth is lost.

"God's silence..." God appears silent to those who are not connected to him. It is often believed that those who are without God are liable to let evil take over their lives. People of God then get fearfull when those who have let evil take over (perverted) grow in numbers.
For example: Why do some people get so bent out of shape when a strip club opens in their town? Why not live, & let live?
The percieved perversion is the strip club, & the nay sayers in the community react out of fear.
God isn't pummelling the strip clubs with lightning bolts is he? So more, & more of them are opening up, due to God's silence. So that has Jerry Falwell & his ilk getting more, & more fearfull.

Well that's my take on it anyway.
