They did.
They took over Christianity created a book of lies to water down the teachings of Jesus and gave Jesus all of the attributes of the Pagan God Mithra right down to his birthday.
The only surviving teachings of Jesus are in a few tattered scrolls dug up in the desert where they were buried in the hopes that the roman church would not find them and destroy them.
What passes as Christianity these days is almost the exact opposite of what Jesus taught and would better be called Paul-ism, after the pretender Paul who claimed to be an apostle but never knew Jesus.

No. A thousand times no! Jesus gave His life willingly. The religious rulers had the greater sin of delivering Him up to be crucified. What God's Word had promised was going to be fulfilled in the fulness of time (right on schedule). Many Roman soldiers were saved due to Jesus teachings and miracles among them. The Roman centurian told Jesus "I am a man under authority and have men under me that when I give them orders, they are carried out" thus recognizing the authority of Jesus Christ and the words he spake bringing things to pass. His servant was healed due to his faith, recognizance and submission to the authority of Jesus Christ. Roman soldiers said "Surely this must have been the Son of God".
A recent archealogical discovery in Megiddo, Biblical Armegeddon, reveals; "Two mosaics inside the church -- one covered with fish, an ancient Christian symbol that predates the cross -- tell the story of a Roman officer and a woman named Aketous who donated money to build the church in the memory "of the god, Jesus Christ."
The Roman soldiers paid to guard the tomb became as dead men in the presence of the holy angels and Jesus resurrecting power. Their very lives were on the line. They told lies but they couldn't stop the truth as their was too much powerful substantiated evidence such as the linens Jesus was buried in as is the manner of the Jews to do with their dead, was left in such a way as to leave no doubt that He was risen!
Romans persecuted the Christians but the church only grew with persecution. It was fed to the lions but the lions couldn't eat it. We are talking about the church triumphant and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. When Stephen was stoned, Saul/Paul was present and was later saved. Jesus could have called more than 12 legions of angels but He stayed on the cross for you and me. Mere humans can never stop the power of God from performing His divine will.

No because Christianity is based and started on a historical figure named Jesus of Nazareth. This figure is the only one in HISTORY to die, and come to life again never to die. His followers could not help but spread the message and those who heard the message could not help but share it. Life-altering truth is contagious. No government can stop that.

Well, I don't think the Romans really had a choice. Their emperor had been converted. Now, had the emperor not been converted to monotheism, we might have had a different outcome regarding the evolution of Western religion.

The answer is reminiscent of an old Lay's Potato Chip commercial: "They tried, but they couldn't do it...."

No, they had only physical powers and weapons. They couldn't even stop the resurrection of the Son of God .
