I will have my gastroscopy next week. How long does it take until you finish? Is it painful when they put a tube inside your mouth down to your stomach? How does it feel? What will happen after gastroscopy test? Thanks.

When you arrive at the endoscopy unit you will be changed into a gown to protect your clothes. The procedure will be explained to you again and you will be asked to give written consent. Most people prefer to have sedation during the procedure. This is not obligatory however. Often an anaesthetic agent will be used to numb the throat and reduce gagging. You will be drowsy but conscious during the gastroscopy. Often people have no recollection of the event afterwards due to the sedation. This effect can last for the rest of the day.

It is illegal to drive while under the influence of sedation and you will need to make alternative arrangements to get home. It is also advisable that you do not use public transport, operate dangerous machinery or go back to work that day. You should avoid making important decisions during this period.

The instrument is passed through the mouth. A mouth guard is used to protect the teeth. Dentures should be removed. Gastroscopy can be uncomfortable but is not usually painful. Some people experience a desire to cough or gag when the instrument is passed into the oesophagus. If possible this impulse should be suppressed as a sore throat can result. Most endoscopists use video monitors now to observe the findings and you can watch this if you want to.

I had a gastroscopy last month, I was very nervous before I got to the hospital, however once I was there the staff were so friendly and reassuring that I felt much better. I had decided to have sedation after reading and listening to other peoples experiences. The procedure was explained fully to me in a very professional & reassuring way, I opted to have the throat spray which completely numbs the throat, I had very caring reassuring staff in the room with me, the whole procedure took just 3-5 minutes it was painless and only a little uncomfortable at times. I was given the report complete with photo of my insides straight away, & was fine to go home straight away with no after effects. If I had know what a simple procedure this was & hadn't listened to horror stories I could have saved myself weeks of worry. Please do not listen to any bad stories, just relax & listen to the staff it really doesn't take any time at all & gives you peace of mind. I hope someone will find my experience helpful.

They sedate you. You will not feel anything. You may be little groggy after due to sedation is all. Otherwise, do what you want and eat what you want. About half an hr.
