I have a Basenji-mix, and she can't seem to decide whether to chase my four cats or to nuzzle them and stick her nose in their ears. She also play-bows to them and tries to get them to chase her -- is that typical?

Yes, that's typical. She loves her feline buddies but she's also a predator. My full basenji will cuddle, bathe and play gently with our cats. But he will chase them if they run. The cats learned not to run and know to stand their ground. If a strange cat comes within view Chaos and my other dog Shadie go ballistic! Its as if our cats are a completely different species from the "strange cats" out there. Basenjis do have a very high prey instinct which automatically kicks in when any small furry object runs by. The fact your basenji mix play-bows to your cats is an excellent sign she accepts them as her family.

The only Basenji dog I knew loved cats and thought he was a cat. he would play with them and often mimic the cats in the house. No need to worry unless she is aggressive towards them so be grateful you have a dog and cat that like each other.

Why do you emphasize that your dog is Basenji? The breed of your dog is irrelevant. Dogs and cats get along just fine. I have 3 cats, and 3 pit bulls. All live in harmony and play with each other -- everyday, for like 4 years now.

I do not personally know any Basenji's but, I have seen them featured on Animal Planet. I'm told they are not very like other dogs. I'm told they will do as they please (like getting on top of counters & tables, etc.) And I hear they don't relate to their owners like most other dogs do. Also, they are 'sight hounds' and it's their nature to chase moving things. Breeders, forgive me if I'm wrong. I'm just passing on what I've heard, not my own personal experience. They are very good looking dogs though.

Mine used to do that when she was a pup. She was best friends with my roomate's cat, and they'd chase each other everwhere. She'd even hide and pounce like a cat occasionally. It was so cute.

Unfortunately, when my roomate moved out my dog didn't hang out with cats for five years. Now she growls at them like you'd expect a dog to. Even the same one (the roomate's cat) that played with her when she was young.

HI
Basenji were used to hunt Lions, sounds like she is doing good with her cats playing with her cats good and that is a good thing because her instincts should be to hunt them.
