After about 20 seconds it switches off and comes back on in a vicious cirlce.I,ve tried all the safe modes etc in F8 but still after 20 seconds it switches off and goes back to startup.Something that did pop up on a blue screen was ....stop 00221..msvcrt.dll bad checksum.I fear the computer may well and truly had it,but any assistance would be appreciated.

i dont know how to help but few months ago i got this exact problem (i think). the bar would run for few secs then momentarily stop and the pc will restart...i had to reinstall windows :(

wt u can try is pressing f5 (safe mode) and see if dat does anything..ok u tried dat :(

I assume you get "0xC0000221:"

This indicates driver problems, system file problems, disk corruption problems (such as a damaged pagefile), or faulty memory hardware.

msvcrt.dll is Microsoft Visual C Run Time library == most likely this would be used by a DRIVER ..

Since safe-mode fails, I suggest you try doing a REPAIR RE_INSTALL [ http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm ]

If you have your Windows CD, boot from the CD and go to recovery console, then type sfc /scannow and see if that fixes it. If not, you can try a repair install instead of a full install, which will hopefully keep all your data intact.

You have a virus that has correupted the startup . The only way to fix it at this point is to reinstall Windows.

Sounds like you need to redo your operating system. The same thing happened to me. I just put in my Windows XP disc and reloaded it and it turned out great.
