God wants us to be like him.
Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Eph 5:1

The question is a bit misleading. God wants Christians to have Christ in His gifts. Not to simply be like Him but to have Him as their salvation. Christ has become for us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption so that no flesh has anything to glory in except the Lord.
What is required from God? Faith
Heb 11:6 For without faith it is impossible to please Him...
But what is this faith? A comprehension of an idea? A trusting in? Believing something? Doing something to show you believe?
In the Book of Galatians it says that we were kept under law until faith came. Now that faith has come we are no longer under law. Faith is the gift of God Eph 2:8. Christ is that faith. That is He is the gift of God. We were kept under law till Christ came. Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith. Heb 12:2 He is the substance of all that was hoped for (Since the fall). The evidence of all that was not seen Heb. 11:1. By Him we obtain a good testimony for with out Jesus it is impossible to please God.
Perhaps we can find God in many places as so many say he is there, or over here, in this and in that. After all God is everywhere isn't he? Yes God is everywhere but that does not mean He is everywhere "For us". He is only promised to be for us where God has placed Him for us, in the Gospel Word and Sacrament.
There is of course character that flow from His gifts but these are fruits from the Good Tree.

OF SUCH IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
Oh, for the faith that never fails
Through all of the sunshine and all of the gales
Oh, for the innocence that once was mine
When all the world was gentle and kind
Oh, for that long-lost sense of awe
To see the world without a flaw
Oh, for a sense of "right" and "wrong"
For a life as simple as any song
Oh, for that sense of mischievous fun
For freedom to laugh, and to dance, and to run
To accept myself with loving grace
Without any need of "saving face"
Oh, for a simple honesty
For ears that hear, and eyes that see
To be meek, and gentle; tender and mild
Oh! For the love of a little child!

Matthew 5:48 says, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
We do that by allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our minds and by putting aside the old ways.
Ephesians 4:23-24 "And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."
So we are to have the same character as Christ.

one character trait?
He said truly that the first commandment is LOVE.
but he also throws in stuff like being repentant and faithful and obedient.
He also says be Perfect, complete, and blameless.
in a day when he rebuked False animal sacrifices from corrupt priests, He declared he wanted a broken heart and a contrite spirit.
He declared the MEEK will inherit the earth as opposed to those those who wil be destroyed and these will be "ashes" under the feet of the Resurrected ONEs.

God wants and demands that we conform to the image of Christ. It's up to us to exercise our free will and obey His will for our lives.
For whom He did foreknow, he also did predestinate TO BE CONFORMED to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Romans 8:29
Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but YIELD yourselves unto the Lord, and enter into His sanctuary, which he hath sanctified forever: and SERVE the Lord your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you. 2 Chron. 30:8

1st Corinthians Chap 16 verse 13-14
Be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. Your every act should be done with love
Theres also many commandments that Jesus gave us like
John chap8 verse 12
Jesus came to them again, saying, i am the light of the world. Whoever follows me walks not in darkness, but will have the light of life.
Basically just follow his teachings and how he approached others to solve their problems to make a better world, anyone with any religion or morals will agree with that

Like I tell my kids, when making decisions ask yourself "What would Jesus do?" So, as Christians we should be striving to be as much as humanly possible to be Christ Like. God gave us the perfect model of how we should be by sending the son, Jesus as a perfect example and then to become our perfect salvation.

well think of it this way, you represent your family, as in you represent God in everything you do. Be a good christian meaning help others who are in need, and try to make the world a better place. God wants us to be GOOD people is all

Christlike-
Read the B-attitudes in John, I think it is.
You know-
Blessed are the Meek, Blessed are the Humble, Blessed are the poor, etc...
I think that is a great example of the kind of character that we should have if we are trying to be Christlike.
Edit****
Actually GodofMars, the First Commandment, is thou shalt Love the Lord thy God, with all thy heart mind might and strength
The second, like unto it, Thou shalt Love they neighbor as thyself.
