They should be tested if they appear to be under the influence at school, and for that reason only. What a person does outside of school is the responsibility of the parents, not the school. If the parents think that their children might be abusing alcohol, then they can take the initiative and take them to get tested. For goodness sake, how much control do you people want to give the government?! I can't stress this enough, parent's need to take responsibility for their children, instead of expecting the school to raise their kids!!

Chic, you just reminded me about something... The reason why a cop can give you a Breathalyzer is because when you got your license you agreed to allow them test you. If you don't want the government giving you random Breathalyzers, don't get your license, and don't drive your car. Are we going to tell our children, if you don't want to be given random drug or alcohol tests, don't go to school?

Random drug tests are performed at many companies, so why not random alcohol tests at work? It is illegal for a person under the age of 21 consume alcohol anyway. And too, I read the story as well, and I noticed that the students will not necessarily be punished by being say kicked of an athletic team, or banned from an event or whatever...just that their parents will be informed and the teen will receive some sort of counseling.

I'm a teacher and I never accept existing students on Facebook, even though I have been added. I think it is worse for a male teacher to be friends with students somehow, I don't know why but I guess that is how society is. I have had students I taught a few years ago, and are almost the same age as me add me though and I've accepted them then so I think it's okay if your friend added him once you left.

Having had 3 kids go through school from 1980 to 2000, I seriously think that the TEACHERS/ PRINCIPALS/ADMINISTRATION and ALL!!! school employees should constantly be random tested for all drugs/Alcohol. It's about the only job in America that doesn't have to be tested. That's just crazy.

Only is the kid seems intoxicated, and then the parents must be informed. Parents should not have to consent if there is reasonable suspicion.

No to testing to see what the kid did over the weekend - that is the parents' responsibility.

Absolutely they should. Teen alcoholism is a rampant problem in America today. Just read the statistics from any police force.

NO! That is an invasion of privacy for the family and the student. I think that the parents can handle it if they have suspicions and they can punish accordingly the school is not the child's parents and should mind their own business.

I just read that story. I think no. Unless they are breaking school rules and currently appear to be under the influence.

Yes if it is suspected they are under the influence, just like a cop can check if you appear to be drunk at the wheel.
