I want to spay my kitty. But when she gets older. How old does a cat have to be to get spayed? But is there a bad side of spaying a cat? Any info on spaying kitties will be good! Thanks! =)

The positives of getting your cat spayed greatly outweigh the minimal risk associated with the surgery.

The only bad side is the risk of being under anesthesia. But modern anesthesias used on cats are very safe, and vets do thousands of spay surgeries - they are very skilled at it.

To be safe, most vet clinics will offer a pre-surgery exam and pre-anesthesia blood tests to check for hidden health problems that might put her at risk before doing the surgery. If you do this and your kitty is healthy, everything should be fine.

I'm glad you're concerned about your cat's well-being and are going to do what's best for her & get her spayed!

This is a very legitimate question, no matter how many times it has been asked. There are so many myths about getting cats spayed and neutered. First of all, a female cat can go into season and reproduce much younger than a male cat can produce. However, now days you can get your female cat spayed at a much younger age. It used to be that the rule was 6 months for a female and almost to a year for a male to be neutered. At any rate..i would suggest doing the spaying or neutering at a young age..less problems with the surgery and also less character changes in the cat. Also i would like to say that if you chose to not spay your cat, then take responsibility for its offspring. Everyone is so quick to say spay and neuter but if there is a chance you would like to have one of the offsprings then consider what you will have to deal with if that occurs. Just be responsible is my idea. I am all for spaying and neutering to help control unwanted pet populations. But it is your choice.

If you DO NOT spay your cat, it is a shorter, more problem- filled life for the kitty and more of a hassle for you when fixing a kitty takes about 15 mins for the vet and can cost as little as $20.

Some problems if you do not fix your kitty:
-goes into heat and tries to get out the door to mate. You are both miserable from her howling and behavior during this monthly time. Other cats will smell her in heat and come around to spray all over your home.
-male kitty zooms for the door to get out and mate
both can have a super stinky spray and they will do it everywhere.

-A shorter life has not been proven but has been linked.

- Possible creation of 600 more unwanted kittens per cat.

With a 3 day recovery period vs. litter after litter of kittens(a super stressful process for cats) it is worth it.
I hope you do the right thing by this kitty and help control the 6 million unwanted dogs and cats per year that are put to death because other people do not spay and neuter

There are no negatives to spay and neuter, only GOOD. Some vets unnecessarily make you wait until 6 months old, but some vets will safely do it at as early as 8 weeks (as long as they are healthy and wiegh a certain amount.) get it done as early as possible and when you feel comfortable doing it.

There really is no reason not to spay your cat before her first estrus cycle.

There are plenty of unwanted cats in the world, why add to the already ridiculous number?

Spaying before her first cycle (~6-7 months old) will greatly reduce her chances of getting many diseases. (cats who go through one estrus cycle are 50% more likely to get mammary cancer later in life.)

The only danger is the anesthesia, which is why a vet will not do it until they weigh at least 2 pounds -- typically by 8 weeks.

It is a safe & routine surgery, plus it prevents very unwanted behavior problems in the future. It also lowers their chances of developing particular health problems and some types of cancers.

Most cats arent as playful when they are spayed. And they usually arent allowed to jump around for a week after the surgery. It's also really expensive
