A few years back, my wife started to feel edgy going up steep elevators or stairs, and stadium seating. It has gradually got worse, especially in stadiums when we go see a show or something. She tells me that it feels like she's falling forward and has no control. She has never been afraid of heights before and cannot understand why its happening now. Is this vertigo or something like it? Please give us some advice on how to counter this effect.

I have the same thing, its vertigo. My doctor gave me Antivert. It helps with dizziness and that feeling like your going to fall forward. If you can't get to a doctor, dramamine may do the same thing and its over the counter. I haven't tried that , but it is for motion sickness. Just take some before going to an event.

Maybe she could try sitting on the very bottom row aka front row... that way her feet will be on "solid ground". As for why its happening, Im not sure. As for the steep stairs, the best thing would be to just hold on to the railing as she goes up or down. It will give her more control. I tend to have the same tendencies at times.

I have the same problem. I can NOT go on escalators either. The only thing that helps even a little bit is holding someone's hand. Wow, I thought I was unique, lol. I would bet that she can't walk over bridges very easily either.

Vertigo it is indeed and what the true underlying source I do not know but needs a doctor confirm what's the cause.
