If you're in the south, I would guess that they are chiggers.

Ear mites. They hang out in dogs ears and their feces ( the ear mite's) turns like black tar in the ear canal. You can buy ear wash at a pet store and clean the dogs ears out at least every couple of weeks to curtail them.
Unless you live someplace where there are ticks. Those start out small and reddish but after they lock into your pets skin and suck up blood, they look like a wad of chewed gum.
