He needs to be checked by a doctor.
If your father hasn't been doing anything violent like lifting heavy objects or falling down etc... then it would probably not be a muskulo-skeletal problem or a hernia.
But the symptoms you describe are very concurrent with kidney stones. (IF IT IS A KIDNEY STONE) - not a diagnosis!!!!!!
The dark color or the urine is due to blood most likely from the ureters (tubes that connect the kidney to the bladder). When the stone passes down the ureters it cuts the lining of these tubes. This is what causes the pain and results in blood in the urine.
Especially if the color was brown to red and not consistent with the color of concentrated urine which is more or a dark orange.
The pain can come and go being very intense to mild, when it is most intense is when the stone is moving down the ureter.
Women who have been pregnant liken the pain of kidney stones to that of child birth. If your father doesn't have a fever or history or urinary tract infections then I wouldn't think it was a UTI.
Your father can also experiance some trouble peeing due to the occlusion of the ureter.
It can take days for kidney stones to pass. However, if the stone is larger than 5 cm in diameter they will not pass and can lead to serious complications, a CAT scan is needed to determine the size and location of the stone.
A doctor should definetly be consulted regardless, your father cannot be successfully diagnosed without actually being evaluated by a physician.
Reply if you need anmore information.

Doubtful that he "tore" his kidney without any direct trauma.
Much of what his problem is will depend on what the circumstances and additional symptoms are: Is he having fevers? Does it hurt when he urinates? Does the pain stay in the flank or does it radiate down to the groin? Has he been able to have any bowel movements at all? Did he develop diarrhea after the constipation problem? Was he doing any heavy lifting or work recently or possibly have hurt his back in any way?
The location of his pain in the flank indicate the possibility of kidney stones, especially with the intermittent nature and sharpness of the pain. The darker urine is more a sign that he probably has not been drinking enough water and the urine is just concentrated. This would go along with the kidney stone theory.
The location of the pain would indicate it could be just back problems as well. As people with bad backs know, when you "throw out your back" moving in certain positions would cause severe pain.
An intestinal/colonic problem may be a possibility as well, especially with a history of constipation. Diverticulitis, which is an infection/inflammation in little pouches in the intestine/colon from straining too much when you have constipation can cause pain in the flank - however, this tends to be more constant pain and associated with fevers. Constipation itself could certainly cause severe abdominal and flank pains as well. While appendicitis could present with flank pain as well, it would be more consistent instead of so intermittent.
Depending on his age and health, an abdominal aortic aneurysm could always be a possibility, although much rarer.
Ideally, when your father has an acute problem like this with severe pain, he should go seek medical attention - like his regular doctor or more likely go to the ER - instead of you asking for medical advice on Yahoo! Answers where the responses you get to medical questions may not only be not useful and inaccurate, but even harmful if you follow them.

Bladder infections can hurt terribly, if they're not treated, but it could be a kidney infection, kidney stones, or something worse. Only a doctor can tell you, and it could be very serious, and require immediate treatment. It could even be a heart attack because they sometimes have some very unconventioinal symptoms. Get him to a doctor right now, and don't take no for an answer.

Yes, it could be a number of things. He needs to get to a Doctor immediately, especially since he is having severe pains.
It could a gall bladder attack, it could be kidney problems, kidney stones, etc. Is he drinking enough water? Clear liquids? The doctor will run a battery of tests to find out what is wrong and to be able to help him feel better. Stress to him, that he really needs to see a doctor as soon as possible. Guessing with us takes away what time it takes to find out what is really is wrong with him from a professional. I will say some prayers for him. You are a good daughter to try to figure out what is wrong if he is not willing to go, but encourage him to go before you have to call an ambulance.

If he is consitpated that could well be the cause and if his urine is dark that means he is dehydrated. He needs to drink more fluids. To relieve the constipation now he should use a suppository or a fleets enema. Once he takes care of the constipation have him use a fiber supplement twice a day like citrucel or metamucil and if his stools are hard then he should add something like colace aka docusate to help keep his stools soft. Have him increase his water intake and eat more high fiber foods and fresh fruits and veggies. He should also consider drinking prune juice or eating prunes regularly. If get rid of the constipation doesn't help the pain then take him to urgent care to find out what is going on. Use the suppos or enema first and then take things from there.

Sounds like a UTI or a kidney infection. There is a small chance that it is kidney stones too. He definitly needs to see a doctor cuz letting this kind of infection go can be deadly. Kidneys are very important organs and he needs to get them checked out. If you can't afford to go to a doctor, or whatever the situation is, then I would definitly recommend a trip to the ER. (not that I am recommending you go there and not pay, but sometimes it is easier to work out a payment plan with them.)

He might be experincing pull muscle or some health ailment unknown to him and also do sound like he has kidney problems because of his urination color. If he have not seen a doctor tell him to do so and do not let the problems get any worser.

I suspect that this may be a kidney infection. I have had this myself and the symptoms sound similar to mine. I suggest he see a doctor as soon as possible. The sooner treatment begins the sooner he will feel better.

Hi, depending on the age of your father, this could be a prostrate problem or kidney stone problem, but if he is in that much pain he should go to the doctor or hospital straight away!!
