Here in the U. S. we have something called screens. I can't believe the British don't have them but, I know they don't. I just don't know why.

The window should have a screen. I can open my window and both my cats never attempt to jump out becuase there is a screen. I did have to teach them not to paw at the screen by simly saying, "ssssstttt" every time they did. They are very well-behaved around screened windows - they just look out and that's all. If you don't teach them, some cats will actually tear the bottom of the screen to get out. My neighbor's cats did that, but he lived on the ground floor so that was not too bad.
Another option is to somehow secure the window opening with some kind of grill or bars.

Get someone to build you a wooden frame, onto which is stapled twilweld or chicken wire.Simply fit the whole frame inside the window space. It may not look brilliant but you could always put some net curtains in front to disguise it. The cat's safety is more important than having a model home after all. Good luck.

We used to have the same problem with our cats. I made my own screens from polycarbonate sheet bought from b & q.
Cut the sheet to the required size to cover the window & frame.
Then draw a grid on the backing paper & drill holes where the grid lines cross (I used a big 22mm 3d drill bit for convenience)
Then fix the sheet over the window using strips of velcro (b & q again).
This material allows sufficient airflow into the room without cutting out light allowing the
window(s) to be left open.
Fair bit of hassle involved but was cheapest quickest fix I could come up with!

Don't you have a screen? If not get some. Even if the window is open only a little bit, if there is no screen they can squeeze out. Same thing with the door. If you have a screen door that you like to keep open, make sure everytime someone goes in or out of it it is shut completely. That should keep your kitty in.

May I suggest purchasing a screen of some sort? It's nice too have the breeze in the room, and if you want the breeze I wouldn't get an AC. Or if your little kitten has mad hops, and likes too claw up your drapes, try clipping him/her. But I think that a screen would be the best!

Definitely buy a window screen [ebay, amazon.com, whatever]. Cats can get through any opening that they can fit their head through (fact), so don't even try to crack the window or block the opening somehow -- cat will win every time. You might want to keep a collar on him if he is trying to get outside too, just in case he gets out by accident.

Buy some fine garden netting and tack this to the windows - this way you will be able to keep the windows open in summer.
I think netting can be found in most garden centres.

I've seen meshes that you attach to windows to stop such a thing when I went to pick up a kitten. Great idea as it lets in air.
