Yes, years of teaching experience (and catching head lice from various kids!) has led to me to this ...

Use your normal shampoo. Put it into your hand and mix in 3 drops of tea-tree oil. Shampoo as normal. Then use lots of conditioner and comb through with a lice comb - the tea-tree oil will have killed most of them, and the conditioner stops the rest moving so you can comb them out.

If it is a bad infestation, as well as the tea-tree oil, add a spoonful of vodka. Yes, really! Then follow the same procedure with the conditioner. It works, trust me!

Firstly keep doing the old tried and tested comb through routine-at least twice in one night!Don't waste money on lotions-use conditioner & tons of it. Then make sure you use a Tea Tree shampoo rergularly. Keep their hair tied back when at school too.It can be a skow process, but you need to comb them through at least twice a week too!!Kids will get nits wherever they happen to be-it seems to be common these days as nits like clean hair so as parents are more concious of their childrens hygeine the little b******ds have a field day!!Nits can't live for long once off the scalp so there's little chance of any surviving in bedding etc.

Don't use the lotion every week, it just builds up a reistance. Our Dr recommended Kwellada P with 1 % permethrin which comes as a creme rinse. Wash hair as usual, towel dry, and apply rinse to scalp drenching thoroughly. allow to sit for 10 min, then comb out using a nit comb. This will kill all the lice and their eggs. repeat in 1 week to make sure you have stopped the cycle. Wash all bedding and clothing they have used in the past week or so. Lice need to come pretty close to your kid's head to "jump". Discourage the kids from sharing clothing, esp hats, and don't use someone elses comb or brush. If the outbreaks continue, I'd consider a new school. Also remember that nits are more prevalent in the winter when kids are in much closer proximity to each other.

I would suggest go over their hair every day, with a fine tooth comb. all the way to the scalp to start. Have you washed all the bedding, and clothing, etc.? If they have back packs for school, have you put them, and any pillows, stuffed animals, etc. in large plastic bags (closed tight) for a few days? Also, do you apply the vinegar every night with a comb? That should help cut thru the glue the nits use to stick to their hair. Also, are there other children in their class(es) that have a problem with lice? The only other thing I could suggest, is talk with their doctor, see what the doctor reccommends. Take care.

Campofinque. Not sure that is how you spell it, but it comes in a green bottle with a ball on top. It is actually used to rub into sore muscle. It is greasy and evidently the nits do not like it. My husband's cousin use to get lice and nits everyweek. They were going through Rid like it was candy. They tried it and it worked. I will warn you it has a strong smell and probably take a couple of shampooings to get rid of the smell and the greasy feel. There is also a shot that you can get from the doctor office.

Good luck

in the end with my kids after trying all the lotions and spending a fortune just to have them come home again 2 days later with more. I brought a Robi comb. Its a fine tooth comb that takes batterys and puts a elctric charge through the teeth that zaps the eggs. All you have to do is go comb there hair every evening before bed, its totally painless for the person, it just make a slight buzzing noise, But it really works. Mine cost about £12... hope that helps.
Dont you just find in maddening that some parents just keep sending there kids to school with nits........

Head lice / nits really are a continual pest until they leave school. However I have a great nit comb it is called the 'Nitty Gritty' and has longer teeth than a regular comb with ridges along them so it removes lice and there eggs. Simply wash child's hair and once conditioner is in comb through with the Nitty Gritty. You can do this as often as necessary, much better than all the chemical solutions out there. Good Luck

They might still be in your HOUSE!!!!

When treating kids for nits, you have to treat your house. All bedding. All stuffed animals, all clothes... think of treating a house for fleas!

You can buy lice spray and put all stuffed animals in a bag and leave them for 48 hours. Same for the carpet. Wash all clothes.

Make sure at school no one is sharing hats. Or pillows. The reading pillow is often a culprit! You can't even share jackets, or sweatshirts...

No sleepovers for 2 weeks. No visiting either. You need a lice free period.

Also only wash hair twice a week - nits seem to not like natural hair oils. AND try to wear hair in a braid or ponytail.

Nits are a pain, my daughter had them on and off for all of her junior school life. The only way to get rid of them is to comb them out with a fine nit comb in the bath with lots of conditioner. someone told me that using tea tree shampoo would keep them away but it didn't. nit lotions just don't work

First, I would stop using the nit lotion every week, because they are probably resistent to it. Then, I would sit each child down, and spend as long as it takes to remove the nits (lice eggs) by hand. In my personal experience, this can take 4-6 hours per child, but it works. Also, be sure to wash all bedding, hats etc. in hot water and dry on high heat. Take a trash bag and put all stuffed animals, pillows, and other items made of cloth in their rooms or anywhere else, and bag them for several months to kill any other lice or nits. Vacuum their rooms every day for 2 weeks, and wipe down all surfaces in their rooms and bathroom with 1 part bleach to 4 parts water. As a last resort, contact your children's pediatician and get a prescription. Good luck!

I just wince at the stress you are going through. I have been there. My daughter (who is 11 now) had a problem with lice. She would go to her dad's house for a visit and come home with it. I went CRAZY. Spent a ton of money on over the counter shampoos, sprays, conditioners and nothing worked. I finally went to the doctor and told them what was going on and they gave me a script for a shampoo. It worked! I wish I could remember what it was, but I am sure they are all comparable. To get the nits out I put lotion in her hair and then put a shower cap on her. I let it sit there overnight and then the next morning I sat for hours combing and picking. I sectioned off hair as I went along so I could tell where I was already at. Then I repeated the same thing the next day.

I finally got it through her dad's thick skull that he needed to clean his house and have his aunts daughters heads checked. Turns out they had it and was passing it to my daughter.

Good luck. I know how bad this sucks :(
