I've heard some stories that it's bad to leave a cat unfixed. The previous owners of our kitty didn't spay her until she was 2.

I know that dogs can develop breast cancer if you don't fix them young, but I don't know how it can affect cats.

Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.
Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat.
Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle.
Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.

Yes unspayed cats do have a greater tendency to develop mammary cancer than "fixed" cats.
It is believed that the hormone storm of going in and out of heat is what does it. Did cat have a litter?
Since she is fixed now, the problem can't get any worse. What's done is done. The only thing you can do is take her to the vet every year for check-ups and shots and make sure the vet knows her history. If you are petting cat and you feel a lump where there should not be a lump, take her to the vet. It may only be an abscess but you will feel better for finding out.

It is a shorter more problem- filled life for the kitty and more of a hassle for you when fixing a kitty takes about 15 mins for the vet and can cost as little as $20.

Some problems if you do not fix your kitty:
-goes into heat and tries to get out the door to mate. You are both miserable from her howling and behavior during this monthly time. Other cats will smell her in heat and come around to spray all over your home.
-male kitty zooms for the door to get out and mate
both can have a super stinky spray and they will do it everywhere.

-A shorter life has not been proven but has been linked.

- Possible creation of 600 more unwanted kittens per cat.

With a 3 day recovery period vs. litter after litter of kittens(a super stressful process for cats) it is worth it.
I hope you do the right thing by this kitty and help control the 6 million unwanted dogs and cats per year that are put to death because other people do not spay and neuter.
