I purchased a 2003 Elantra for my wife new, It has 120,000 miles on it and has prove to be very good in all areas, I will recommend it to anyone, be sure to do a back ground check as with all used cars it may have had some past problem you need to know about. A timing belt will be needed at 80,000 miles at around 400.00 so be careful and compare the price of a new one as well there not that expensive and are good cars far quieter than Toyota and Honda and far better I have owned all three, the Elantra is best. Good Luck and GOD Bless.

we have owned and still own elantras. My daughter totaled her 2002 elantra 3 years ago. She was driving too fast, failed to negotiate a sharp curve and hit a tree head-on. Luckily she was wearing her seat belt, no injuries. The cop's were even amazed after looking at the car. Just make sure the belts have been changed or that could run into a big expense also the other maintenance has been done on a regular basis-oil changes, etc We also owned a civic which we did not like-very noisy and uncomfortable riding car- good resale and good manual transmission It was an 05, bought new, we sold it

They are good cars but have some issues. They used a timing belt not a timing chain so you might have to replace that but find out from the owner. Secondly, they had an airbag sensor recall. Find out if the recall has been addressed. Call your insurance company and ask them about rates and overall rating from a safety point of view.
I personally like the elantra but just be an educated buyer before you make the purchase. Good luck on the car and congrats on the new baby!

As far as safety goes, the Elantra ain't no Hummer or Escalade but it's not bad. Hyundais are generally reliable so if it is a good deal go for it, just make sure that at that milage the timing belt has been changed and that you take it for a test drive to see how it runs. Good luck!

Do some research on the vehicle at www.edmunds.com. They should include crash ratings and reliability ratings in the review and customer review sections.
Mileage wise, it's not a bad buy. Reliability on Hyundais have always been good, reguardless of reputation. Safety might leave something to be desired.

The crash test ratings aren't the best on the Hyundai Elantra's but they are generally reliable cars, I have a friend who owns one (automatic transmission) and it's been a very reliable car for her, her daughter also owns one but hers is a stick shift and it's also a very reliable car.
