Yes, it is OK. Don't listen to the naysayers.
You need to use the clippers properly for a good cut, though. You must cut the nail from the "side." That is, hold the clippers parallel to the floor while holding the nail parallel to the floor. You don't want to cut in the direction in which you cut your own nails.
Also, do not cut the quick -- that's the pink you see at the base of the nail. It's actually a blood vessel.

Geeze... I can't believe some of the answers on here... YES you can trim your cats nails with regular clippers AS LONG AS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. If you don't know what you are doing you need to be shown by a vet or a groomer because you cannot cut the quick, they will bleed. I trim TONS of cats nails, and i usually use human nail clippers because it is easier and they are almost aways available. It will not hurt them, it will not "Cause infection", they are perfectly safe if you know what you are doing.

Just buy a pair made for a cat. They don't even cost $5 and they make life a hell of a lot easier. You just might need help...one person to hold the cat and the other to do the job. If you use human clippers, you'll run the chance of cutting her nails too short which will hurt very badly, may damage her nerves and will defininetly get blood everywhere in your house.

You can trim them with regular human clippers but the cut isn't as clean and sometimes it can actually split the nail which can be very painful. A good pair of clippers only cost a few bucks. Spend the money.

no b/c if u cut them too short then it can cause nerve damage or bleeding and infections. the best bet is to get cat nail clippers that have the guard on it that won't let you go but so far. don't cut farther than the dark part(thats the blood) just cut and leave a lil bit of that white part.
if your still not comfortable with that then take her to a vet or shelter and they will do it for a small fee...some shelters and humane societys will do it for free...jsut tell them that it is your 1st time havin a kitty and you want to do it right maybe they will show you and u can learn from then from then on :)

The way the cats claws are shaped there is no way that a regular nail clipper will work. you have two choices, or three, first is to buy pets nail clippers, second, have groomer cut them, or leave it like they are. good luck.

You can, but you need to be very careful. Try taking your cat to the vet to get the nails trimmed.

Yes it is...I've always used regular nail clippers on her. Just make sure you don't go too far down or she'll bite your face off.

Yes, it is. Just turn the clippers sideways. I've been trimming my cats claws this way for years.
