MY SHIHTZU GAVE BIRTH TO A SECOND LITTER OF PUPS. I AM CURIOUS AS TO WHY SHE ONLY HAD TWO PUPPIES AGAIN. I THOUGHT THE FIRST TIME SHE HAD TWO PUPS BECAUSE IT WAS HER FIRST LITTER EVER BUT NOW I AM WONDERING WHY THE SECOND LITTER WAS ALSO ONLY TWO PUPS NOT THAT I MIND BUT JUST WANTED TO KNOW IS THERE A REASON FOR THIS COULD IT BE THE MALE DOG?

It's generally the bi tch that determines the number of puppies. She's just not a big producer. I had one girl that I bred twice, she had litters of 4 and 5 (smallish litter for a basset), while my other girls usually have 7-10.

It really has nothing to do with the breed to how many pups she may have.It is the ***** that determines the amount of puppies that she will have in a litter. She only seems to be releasing 2 eggs to be fertilized during the mating.

My Shih Tzu had 9 pups her first litter and 7 her second. It is all in the genetics of the mother. Just be glad the pups are healthy and happy. When there is a large litter and you have to supplement the pups every 2 hours, it gets exhausting!

Good luck!

No, it's not because of the stud.

Smaller dogs tend to have smaller litters. Chihuahuas usually only have 2 or 3 pups at a time too. Generally, the number of pups that a dog will give birth to is about half of the number of nipples she has.

Because she is a toy dog and 2 pups is not all that unusual for a toy.

They are small dogs and can only handle a few puppies at a time. Most small dogs will only have two or three, sometimes even one. But you don't sound knowledgeable enough to even be breeding dogs.

Her tiny body may only be able to accomodate 2 pups at a time. How many did you think she'd have?

Maybe they are not... you know... doing it long enough. I know, sounds stupid but it is most likely the reason.
