i have a sixteen year old who wants her tongue pierced. but my concern is her health and her teeth. My sister got hers done about ten years ago, she no longer wears it because she thinks and I believe that because of the piercing, she has lost weight her once perfectly straight teeth are crooked and when she gets sick it's hard for her to fight it off. I want an honest answer before I make my decision.

Just like with any other piercing problems can arise if all the rules aren't followed. It coould chip her teeth, wear down the enamnal. If she doesn't turn it everyday the tongue could grow over the piercing and there's always risk of infeciton. Worst case scenario some people ahve lost their tongues. But if she follows all the rules that the piercing place gives her, the last few things won't happen.

Hi there!

Tongue piercings do come with a hefty amount of risks. First off if the piercer mis-judges where the piercing should go even the smallest amount there could be irreparable damage to the nerves in the tongue and the muscles that enable movement. Aside from the risk of damage to the tongue, the piercing is constantly being hit and moved around on the teeth when the person talks or chews and can cause enamel damage, gum damage and possibly result in the cracking of teeth and having to get them replaced by dental implants. Infection is also a risk, with the constant use of the mouth for eating and talking, there is the potential for germs to infect the new piercing and cause irreversible damage as well. I would suggest not letting your daughter get her tongue pierced. Aside from all of the risks, she will have to take it out for school and her job (if she has one) so it's not worth it in the long run. Hope this helps!!

I can say this. Tongue piercing has pros and cons. The pros are none. The cons are that research is being done to prove what you said but isn't complete yet. I honestly believe that it is wrong because it can damage your teeth and it isn't very attractive. I know a 16 year old girl who lives down the street and her parents told her she has to wait until she is 18. They feel that that is the age that you can make level headed decisions. I would agree with that and I think that you should make her wait 2 years.

I have plenty of friends and family members who have their tongues pierced and they've had absolutely no problem with it. Their teeth is not messed up or anything...they did lose weight at first, but that is just because they couldn't eat for the first couple of days. But that lessens after a week or so...I mean i think that it would be okay...i really do...

I have my tongue pierced, and I have not had any problems with it. If you decide to let her get it done, research the place you choose to take her (and yes, you will have to take her since she is under 18) to be sure they use proper sterilization techniques. After doing it, make sure she follows the cleaning procedures given to her by the piercer. They take about 2 weeks to heal. As long as she keeps it clean and takes care of it, she shouldn't have a problem. Best of luck to her, and you!
