I get caught in this every now and then and have never been instructed on the escape. If the guy has you in the guard and is able to sink in the guillotine choke what are your options? I seem to flounder a bit on this one and have been completely choked unconscious in this position. Only thing I know is try to get your hands in his arms and to try to lift yourself up off your knees to put your hips in the air. Is there even a good escape once you are caught that far? What kind of mistakes lead people to get caught their? It seems like sometime I leave my head to high to allow people to get it.

Bushido not sure I follow you. This is JJ training I can't do the elbows etc. the only reason I was unconscious was because I waited to long to tap. I felt the pain but kept trying to fight it instead of just tapping.

Good question. Apply pressure from your forearm to the front of their neck. Grab their wrist with your other hand to relieve some of the pressure and look up towards the sky twisting your upper body. Stand on the balls of your feet and lean forward basing on the balls of your feet and leaning all of your body weight on your forearm which is on the front of their throat. This will in turn choke them and force them to release their hold on your neck. This is the proper way to escape from guillotine from full guard. You really should just ask someone with a blue belt to show you after class. Every submission has an escape and there is a technique to do each one properly depending on the position. Hope this helps.

I've never been choked by a guillotine choke my advice is when he sinks it in, with one hand grab the arm thats choking you and with the other hand put it on his back.
The reason you do this is so with the hand thats grabbing the choking arm can pull so he can't go full pressure, and with the hand on his back you use that to hold him back that way he can't lean back giving it more pressure.
That should give you enough time to pop your head out the choke(make sure to be pulling his arm out as well). Works everytime for me.
It's also on the book by Renzo and Royler Gracie called Theory and Technique which I highly reccomend.

the best thing i could say to you is your not savage enough, even if it's only training if someones going to go to the extreme of making you unconciuos(spelling)you need to be more aggressive.dont believe what ppl say about your body having 9 weapons or 12 or whatever.almost every part of your body is capable of being a weapon in the right situation.the point of your shoulder is 1 that can be very effective.the first thing you have to do is not panic and get air before you worry about escape in any choke or strangle hold.it's a little hard to give spefic's without being there in person, but if it was in class you should have tapped before you passed out?while i am a good ground fighter i dont think your sensei would approve of my methods in class?but do try what i said about other parts of your body.no,dont bite his nose of in class.leave that for the streetlol.
also some things i would use are unsporting in class and illegal.and i dont thik your sensei would be impressed if you used them.i like that-to work and write yahoo answers.hahahahalol.
working on the arm not choking you is what imeant bt getting air.
PS>the only real answer is dont get into it in the first place?lol.

I don't know about any definate escapes when its that far, but since they have to lock it with only their hands or fingers sometimes I would say work their hands, fingers, wrists for an escape. Protect your neck and keep you chin down or tilted sideways..
If you keep your body lower, and stay close to his chest then they have less leverage on your neck.. probably the escape involves twisting your body sideways and moving around like the triangle escape..though you would have to pin him, free your neck and pass guard
Do you lunge in a alot head first? You might want to alter you attack...don't just shoot in. Try to off balance, try to get side control or use your legs guard instead in your attacks to keep the distance. Its a pretty easy choke to see coming when you're trying to take control from the top in sparring and you come straight in. I think it happens mostly when you lower your head not keep it up. so also keep your arms up to block theirs. If your arms are up you can increase the space and mak it harder for him to lock in this hold.

The key is not letting him sink it in in the first place. Keep your chin tucked to your neck as tight as possible. If he sinks it you're pretty much screwed in the ring. Don't tap out of this...it's one of the submissions that won't do any real damage...you'll just pass out then wake up, so fight it as long as you can. Try to pry his arm off your neck, but in all honesty it almost never happens if he sinks it right. If it happens on the street, go for small joints like his thumbs and fingers and hope you hurt him enough for him to let go...or bite him or go for his eyes or something.

My best advise to you is: lift your hip on the air, stand on your feet(not your knees), try to have a good balance, put one of your foot across on the chest of him or her, and twisted their body. If you do it right, your opponent should loose the grip, and you will be free from the guillotine choke. I hoped this will help you. Good Luck!

If you caught in this you need to try to break his grip by working on the arm not choking you.

Take your hands and put them on his face then thrust your thumbs under his jaw bone and push as hard as you can.
