Recently our 15 week old boxer cross has taken it upon himself to grab any shoes, mittens etc that we keep near the front door. He picks one, runs back to the living room with it and plays with it before going back and getting another one. We tell him no, make it clear his toys are for chewing/playing and not our shoes/mittens/gloves etc.

We've taught him to ring a bell when he needs to go out, so he's not brining us our shoes as a sign to go outside. What would another reason be?

at 15 weeks he just wants to play and anything on the ground or that he can reach in his mind is his.
as he gets older you'll be able to teach him NO but just like a child I'd just remove anything you don't want him to get from his reach. Is a little bit of a hassle I know but not near as big as buying new shoes and mittens etc.
You can't punish him for wanting to play, it's all his mind knows how to do at the moment.

Your pup can't differentiate between his toys and your stuff. Put a shelf or container high enough where he can't get it for you mittens, etc. And if you must take your shoes off then put shoes in a closet.
